Isomeric states observed in heavy neutron-rich nuclei populated in the fragmentation of a208Pb beam

Heavy neutron-rich nuclei were populated via the fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV 208 82 Pb beam. Secondary fragments were separated and identified and subsequently implanted in a passive stopper. By the detection of delayed γ rays, isomeric decays associated with these nuclei have been identified. A total of 49 isomers were detected, with the majority of them observed for the first time. The newly discovered isomers are in 204,205 80 Hg, 201,202,204,205 79 Au, 197,203,204 78 Pt, 195,[199][200][201][202][203] 193,[197][198][199] 196 75 Re, 190,191 74 W, and 189 73 Ta. Possible level schemes are constructed and the structure of the nuclei discussed. To aid the interpretation, shell-model as well as BCS calculations were performed.

Feeding of Rh and Ag isomers in fast-neutron-induced reactions

Background: In (n, n ′ ) reactions on stable Ir and Au isotopes in the mass A = 190 region the experimentally established feeding of the isomers relative to the feeding of the corresponding ground states increases with increasing neutron energy up to the neutron energy where the (n, 2n) reaction channel opens up and then decreases.Purpose: In order to check for similar behavior in the mass A = 100 region the feeding of isomers and ground states in fast-neutron-induced reactions on stable isotopes in this mass region was studied. This is of especial interest for Rh which can be used as a radiochemical detector.Methods: Excited states were studied using the (n, n ′ γ), (n, 2nγ) and (n, 3nγ) reactions on 103 Rh and 109 Ag. A germanium-detector array for γ-ray detection and the broad-spectrum pulsed neutron source of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center's Weapons Neutron Research facility were used for the measurement. The energy of the incident neutrons was determined using the time-of-flight technique.Results: Absolute partial γ-ray cross sections were measured for 57 transitions feeding isomers and ground states in 101,102,103 Rh and 107,108,109 Ag. The feeding of the isomers was found to be very similar in the corresponding reaction channels and it is compared to the feeding determined for the ground states. Conclusions:The opening of reaction channels at higher neutron energies removes angular momentum from the residual nucleus and reduces the population of the higher-spin isomers relative to the feeding of the lower-spin ground states. Similar behavior was observed in the mass A = 190 region in the feeding of higher-spin isomers, but the reverse behavior was observed in 176 Lu with a lower-spin isomer and a higher-spin ground state.PACS numbers: PACS number(s): 25.40.-h, 28.20.-v, 24.10.-i, 25.40.Fq * fotia@lanl.gov 2

Mercury‐197 m/g are a promising pair of radioactive isomers for incorporation into a theranostic as they can be used as a diagnostic agent using SPECT imaging and a therapeutic via Meitner‐Auger electron emissions. However, the current absence of ligands able to stably coordinate 197m/gHg to a tumour‐targeting vector precludes their use in vivo. To address this, we report herein a series of sulfur‐rich chelators capable of incorporating 197m/gHg into a radiopharmaceutical. 1,4,7,10‐Tetrathia‐13‐azacyclopentadecane (NS4) and its derivatives, (2‐(1,4,7,10‐tetrathia‐13‐azacyclopentadecan‐13‐yl)acetic acid (NS4‐CA) and N‐benzyl‐2‐(1,4,7,10‐tetrathia‐13‐azacyclopentadecan‐13‐yl)acetamide (NS4‐BA), were designed, synthesized and analyzed for their ability to coordinate Hg2+ through a combination of theoretical (DFT) and experimental coordination chemistry studies (NMR and mass spectrometry) as well as 197m/gHg radiolabeling studies and in vitro stability assays. The development of stable ligands for 197m/gHg reported herein is extremely impactful as it would enable their use for in vivo imaging and therapy, leading to personalized treatments for cancer.
