Heavy neutron-rich nuclei were populated via the fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV 208 82 Pb beam. Secondary fragments were separated and identified and subsequently implanted in a passive stopper. By the detection of delayed γ rays, isomeric decays associated with these nuclei have been identified. A total of 49 isomers were detected, with the majority of them observed for the first time. The newly discovered isomers are in 204,205 80 Hg, 201,202,204,205 79 Au, 197,203,204 78 Pt, 195,[199][200][201][202][203] 193,[197][198][199] 196 75 Re, 190,191 74 W, and 189 73 Ta. Possible level schemes are constructed and the structure of the nuclei discussed. To aid the interpretation, shell-model as well as BCS calculations were performed.

Neutron transfer in the C13+Au197 reaction from gold isotope residuals

Residual gold nuclei were produced via neutron transfer at multiple energies using a 130 MeV 13 C beam incident on a stacked foil target consisting of alternating layers of 197 Au and 27 Al. Production cross sections, over an energy range of 56 to 129 MeV, for seven gold isotopes and two gold isomers were determined through activation analysis. By using the Wilczyński binary transfer model with a modified version of the recoil formula and a standard evaporation model, we were able to reproduce the isotopic production cross sections at high beam energy, with some disagreement at lower beam energies. This limiting angular momentum model does not predict the transfer of sufficient angular momentum to reproduce the observed isomeric populations.

Abstract.The neutron-rich isotopes of tungsten, osmium and platinum have different shapes in their ground states and present also shape transitions phenomena. Spectroscopic information for these nuclei is scarce and often limited to the gamma rays from the decay of isomeric states. For the neutron-rich even-even osmium isotopes 194 Os and 198 Os, a shape transition between a slightly prolate deformed to an oblate deformed ground state was deduced from the observed level schemes. For the even-even nucleus lying in between, 196 Os, no gamma ray transition is known. In order to elucidate the shape transition and to test the nuclear models describing it, this region was investigated through gamma-ray spectroscopy using the AGATA demonstrator and the large acceptance heavy-ion spectrometer PRISMA at LNL, Italy. A two-nucleon transfer from a 198 Pt target to a stable 82 Se beam was utilized to populate medium-high spin states of 196 Os. The analysis method and preliminary results, including the first life-time measurement of isomeric states with AGATA, are presented. a
