Nuclear seawater desalination plant coupled with 200 MW heating reactor

Abstract: Abstract:A feasibility study on nuclear seawater desalination plant in which a 200 MW nuclear heating reactor (NHR-200) is coupled with MED processes has been completed, and the Chinese government has agreed to build a nuclear seawater desalination plant of this type in the Shandong Peninsula of China. Two different kinds of MED processes, high temperature stacked VTE-MED and low-temperature horizontal tube MED-TVC, have been investigated and compared, and their capacities for freshwater production are 160 000… Show more

“…Notwithstanding the differences in the method of energy generation, the way in which desalination can be achieved between fusion and fission technologies is similar, see below. In 2015, 9 fission desalination projects existed worldwide that were either in planning or operational [57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65]. The IAEA has linked interest in SMRs for desalination to advantages such as higher economic viability, smaller reactor size (less space required), and smaller construction times (leading to reduced costs) [66].…”

“…Se ha llamado así a los procesos en los cuales se emplean la energía procedente de un reactor nuclear en un proceso de desalinización, generalmente de agua de mar [22,23]. Es importante mencionar que la desalinización propiamente dicha se realiza en una planta de desalinización acoplada al reactor que emplea un método como destilación multiefecto (MED), evaporación instantánea multietapa (MSF) como se muestra en la Figura 3, ósmosis inversa (RO) [24], etc.…”

“…The literature addressing water scarcity in China is extensive but not comprehensive; several studies have been conducted on water desalination in China but with no detail on nuclear desalination [7][8][9], on nuclear desalination but not from a Chinese perspective [10][11][12][13][14][15], and on novel reactor technologies to perform desalination in China but not on how to develop a desalination industry to address shortage in its totality [16][17][18][19][20]. Zhang et al [7] and Zhou and Tol [8] described the technical and economic characteristics of different desalination processes and their implementation in China.…”
