Nucleotide sequence and structure of cytoplasmic 5S RNA and 5.8S RNA of Chlamydomonas reinhardii

Abstract: Three small RNAs of the cytoplasmic 8OS ribosomes of the green unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardii have been sequenced. They include two species of ribosomal 5S RNA, a major and a minor one of 122 and 121 nucleotides respectively, which differ from each other by 17 bases, and also the ribosomal 5.8S RNA of 156 nucleotides. Novel structural features can be recognized in the 5S RNAs of C. reinhardii by a comparison with published 5S RNA sequences. In addition the secondary structure of these small RNA mole… Show more

“…Recently reported sequences for the 5S rRNAs of ChZlcmydomonas reinhardii [33] and the ascomycetes AspergiZZus niduZans and Neurospora crassa [34] support our model by providing further phylogenetic diversity of sequence for the proposed extensions to helices II and IV and confirm the unacceptability of the alternative structures mentioned in the preceding paragraph. [31].…”

“…The sequence of 120 nucleotides from the 3'terminus was determined by the chemical method [3] and confirmed by the enzymatic method [4] using (3 '-32P]RNA. The sequence of the 5'-terminal region was also confirmed by the same enzy- species, C. cohnii [5], E. gracilis [6] and C. reinhardii [7] for comparison.…”
