Nucleotide sequence of the polyhedron envelope protein gene region of the Lymantria dispar nuclear polyhedrosis virus

Abstract: A 6.4 kb region from the Lymantria dispar multicapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (LdMNPV) genome was sequenced and found to contain open reading frames (ORFs) homologous to the polyhedron envelope (PE) protein coding sequence, and the C-terminal half of ORF 1, which is a gene located upstream of the PE protein gene in other baculoviruses. The proteins predicted from the LdMNPV genes encoding the PE protein, and ORF 1 demonstrated 27 and 34% amino acid sequence identity, respectively, with the corresponding gen… Show more

“…It is interesting to note that genes previously thought to be unique for OpMNPV (Op113) or BmNPV (Bm81), were also found in BusuNPV, as Bs14 and Bs38, respectively. A homologue of the ORF2 in the polyhedral envelope protein (PEP) region of Lymantria dispar MNPV (Bjornson & Rohrmann, 1992) was also found in BusuNPV as Bs10. Three inhibitor of apoptosislike genes (iap) were identified in BusuNPV and they are numbered according to their relative location on the linearized BusuNPV genome (Fig.…”

“…A number of LdMNPV genes that are also present in D. S. Bischoff and J. M. Slavicek AcMNPV have been identified and characterized, including ecdysteroid UDP-glucosyl transferase (Riegel et al, 1994), DNA polymerase (Bjornson et al, 1992), polyhedral envelope (Bjornson & Rohrmann, 1992a), polyhedrin (Smith et al, 1988), p39 nucleocapsid (Bjornson & Rohrmann, 1992b) and viral protein kinase (Bischoff & Slavicek, 1994).…”

“…The viral genome has been mapped with restriction endonucleases (Smith et al, 1988;Riegel et al, 1994), and transcription and translation maps have been generated (Slavicek, 1991). A number of genes that have been previously identified in the AcMNPV including the ecdysteroid UDP-glucosyl transferase (Riegel et al, 1994), DNA polymerase (Bjornson et al, 1992), polyhedral envelope protein (Bjornson and Rohrmann, 1992a), polyhedrin (Smith et al, 1988), p39 nucleocapsid (Bjornson and Rohrmann, 1992b), and viral protein kinase (Bischoff and Slavicek, 1994), have been located and characterized in the LdMNPV. Even though several LdMNPV genes have been characterized at the structural level the life cycle of this virus had not been detailed.…”
