Nudging Drivers to Safety: Evidence from a Field Experiment

Abstract: Driving is an integral component of many operational systems, and any small improvement in driving quality can have a significant effect on accidents, traffic, pollution, and the economy in general. However, making improvements is challenging given the complexity and multidimensionality of driving as a task. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of nudging to improve driving performance. In particular, we leverage a smartphone application launched by our industry partners to send three types of nudge… Show more

“…Our findings support recent evidence from other fields that pre-task briefings, sometimes called team huddles, can positively influence important factors related to safety outcomes (Di Vincenzo, 2017). These briefings have long been used in military logistics contexts, and act as “nudges”, which have been shown to improve intended behaviors in various fields (Choudhary et al. , 2022; Flygansvaer et al.…”

“…Closer to our own discipline of logistics & supply chain management (LSCM), Nudge theory has been applied to investigate supply chain transformation (Wang & Pettit, 2022), carbon emissions (Yin et al, 2020; Dhanorkar & Siemsen, 2021), diversity issues in sourcing and procurement (Atal et al, 2019), recycling behavior (Flygansvaer et al, 2021), and driver safety (Choudhary et al, 2022). Even at the BOP, Nudge theory has been shown to be applicable in that fertilizer purchases and use were enhanced for Kenyan farmers who receive nudges in the form of visits from officials (Duflo et al, 2011).…”

“…(2021) utilized sensor data collected while driving to measure a driver's behavior (such as harsh braking and speeding) and examined the impact of providing immediate feedback to drivers. They also found that sending a nudge to drivers could significantly improve the safety of their driving performance (Choudhary et al., 2022).…”
