The most complete and continuous fossil record of armadillos is composed mostly by isolated osteoderms, frequently found in paleontological and archaeological sites that bear continental South American mammals. Their external morphology has been used to define several species. In the last decade, many authors have focused on the internal structure of vertebrate osteoderms using histological and paleohistological studies. These studies allowed identification of useful features in systematic and phylogenetic contexts. In armadillos, osteoderms are constituted by compact bone tissue (primary and secondary osteons, and concentric layers or lamellae) that delimits cavities, which could contain different soft tissues (adipose tissue, hair follicles, bone marrow, and sweat and sebaceous glands). Traditional paleohistological techniques have allowed the recognition of homologous cavities to those found in osteoderms of current species and from comparison deduce which kind of tissue could had occupied them. We have recently utilized 3D reconstructions in osteoderms of extant species of armadillos to analyze the micromorphology, disposition, and the relationship of different cavities and understand them in depth. Here, we present the results of the application of paleohistology and microtomography in osteoderms of representatives of diferent taxa of extinct Dasypodidae (Astegotheriini, Stegotheriini, BUtaetini,^Euphractini, Eutatini), which allowed us to compare homologous structures based on their three-dimensional reconstruction. The results, added to the previous external morphology studies, have allowed us to define morphological patterns (consistent within each linage). The variation of the volume and extension of cavities associated with different tissues could be strongly associated with changes in the climate and environmental conditions of the species distribution areas.

Resumen. En esta contribución se reporta por primera vez restos fósiles de mamíferos y trazas continentales hallados en la Formación Sarmiento (Eoceno medio a Mioceno Temprano), aflorante en la localidad de Cabo Raso (Chubut, Argentina). Entre los mamíferos se destaca la presencia del roedor Soriamys gaimanensis (primer registro fuera de la localidad de Bryn Gwyn), además de los chinchilloideos Eoviscaccia australis y Perimys sp. En el mismo nivel se hallaron dientes aislados de notoungulados (Hegetotheriidae indet. y Pachyrukhinae cf. Pachyrukhos sp.). Por otra parte, se reporta el icnotaxón Chubutolithes gaimanenesis (hallado en el nivel subyacente al portador de mamíferos), siendo ésta la tercera localidad de la provincia del Chubut en la que se lo registra. Estos materiales permitieron proponer edades relativas para ambos niveles de la Formación Sarmiento en dicha localidad, uno de ellos referible a las Edades Mamífero Continentales de América del Sur (SALMA su sigla en inglés) Casamayorense (Eoceno medio) y el otro a la SALMA Colhuehuapense (Mioceno Temprano). Desde un punto de vista faunístico, el hallazgo de la nueva asociación Colhuehuapense para Argentina resulta relevante dada la restricción geográfica de los yacimientos de esta edad comparado con otras SALMAs (e.g., Deseadense o PanSantacrucense). Desde un punto de vista geográfico, Cabo Raso es la única localidad actualmente costera de Chubut con fósiles del Mioceno Temprano descriptos hasta ahora.

The late Oligocene mammalian fauna of Quebrada Fiera is one of the most diverse of the Deseadan SALMA (South American Land Mammal Age). We describe its endemic xenarthran assemblage, represented by 13 species, consisting of 2 stem sloths and 11 armoured cingulates. The rare folivoran material confirms the presence of Octodontotherium, one of the early known mylodontids, and suggests the existence of a new, small, non-megalonychid megatherioid, Similhapalops nivis. The lumbar vertebrae of Octodontotherium sp. provide the oldest evidence of xenarthry for the order. The presence at the knee joint of an ossified meniscus and cyamo-fabella strongly suggests a plantigrade ancestral condition in Mylodontidae. Armoured xenarthrans are represented by the armadillos Eutatini (Meteutatus sp., M. lagenaformis, and Stenotatus ornatus), an undetermined Euphractinii, the 'horned' peltephilids Peltephilus sp. and P. undulatus, and the palaeopeltid Palaeopeltis inornatus; an undetermined Glyptodontidae, the glyptatelines Glyptatelus cf. tatusinus and Clypeotherium sp., and an undetermined propalaehoplophorine. The xenarthrans represent one-third of the mammals of the Quebrada Fiera fauna, one of the most varied at the end of the Palaeogene in South America. This vertebrate fauna is represented by a mix of endemic taxa and other species of high latitude (Patagonian) origin, but few from low latitude faunas. A detailed study of this mammalian assemblage, complemented by detailed geological and petrographical studies, suggests the existence of strong volcanic activity, and the presence of braided rivers and lagoonal environments in open habitats under a temperate or hot climate, with savannas and/or grasslands and isolated forests during the late Oligocene at the foot of the proto-Andes.
