Abstract:We estimated the number of deaths in France for the year 2000 in HIV-infected adults using three sources. The sources were (1) the 'Mortalité 2000' survey (M2000): 964 deaths were documented by 185 hospital wards involved in HIV management; (2) 1288 death certificates with a mention of HIV infection (INSERM-CepiDc) and (3) the French hospital database on HIV infection (FHDH) identified 654 deaths. The capture-recapture method was used with log-linear modelling. Overall 1559 deaths were observed. Estimation of … Show more
Among patients diagnosed for HIV infection in the HAART era, poor social situation is an independent risk factor of mortality and morbidity, and is not explained by delayed access to diagnosis or treatment.

“…11 The rate of death could be underestimated in our population, as observed with other database. 12 However, we focused only on patients diagnosed with HIV since 1996, with a limited risk of death limiting the potential bias. Moreover, the rate of death was comparable with other French studies conducted since 1996.…”
“…If we apply this rate to the estimated number who had infection detected late in France in 2004, 270 people will die in the subsequent two years, representing 16% of the 1700 HIV related deaths in France each year. 8 Late testing could also be important in the spread of the infection. In two trials to prevent transmission of HIV by increasing condom use, 9 10 transmission was reduced by 20% among patients with identified HIV infection.…”
Although around half the French population has had an HIV test, many people are still not diagnosed until the disease is advanced. Cyrille Delpierre and colleagues believe the answer is to expand routine testing
