Numerical analysis of textured piston compression ring conjunction using two-dimensional-computational fluid dynamics and Reynolds methods

Abstract: The Reynolds equation, in which some items have been omitted, is a simplified form of the Navier-Stokes equations. When surface texturing exists, it may unreasonably reveal the tribological effects in some cases. In this paper, both the two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics method, which is based on the Navier-Stokes equations, and the corresponding one-dimensional Reynolds method are adopted to analyze the performance of the textured piston compression ring conjunction. To conduct a comparison between … Show more

“…(h t /l t )² << 1, a rather small error can be expected [160,161]. This was supported by studies presented from Van Odyck and Venner [162] as well as Wen et al [163]. As pointed out by Feldman et al [164], the Reynolds equation can be considered a conservative estimation even in case of unfavourable texture dimensions.…”

“…For the surface textured RLS, as shown in Figure 4, the CFD method and Reynolds equation are usually adopted to predict the lubrication behaviors. Wen et al 32 conducted an investigation on the lubrication properties of the surface textured RLS by using the CFD method and Reynolds equation. Their result indicates that the Reynolds equation is suitable to analyze the lubrication properties of the RLS with surface texture.…”
