Numerical Analysis of the Effects of the Bending Stiffness of the Cable and the Mass of Structural Members on Free Vibrations of Suspension Bridges

Abstract: The article determines natural frequencies of vibration and the corresponding mode shapes of a suspension bridge with the varying bending stiffness of cables and examines variations that occur in these characteristics with respect to parametric changes in the bridge. A single span suspension steel footbridge with flexible cables has been selected as an initial model used for studying the dynamic characteristics of a suspension system. With the help of the finite elements (FE) method, parameter studies of the b… Show more

“…In the research field of vibration-based SHM methods [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19], the system identification is mentioned as the first step [20] to determine the current health of the structure [21]. The task involves the identification of a dynamic system, which is described by specific stiffness, damping, and mass parameters [22,23]. After that, various damage detection and localisation algorithms can be used [24].…”

“…Due to lower vertical frequency, lighter mass, and smaller damping, the floor system is susceptible to the human activities 10 (such as walking, running, and jumping), and vibration serviceability problem may arise if an excessive vibration is beyond a certain limit, resulting in discomfort and even psychological fear to occupants. 11 Consequently, the cost aiming to prevent the functionality of the floor system to be compromised by potential vibrations and maintaining the floor system would be high. 1 An overall research on capturing vibration performance of the long-span floor system is therefore aided for the aforementioned phenomenon.…”

“…In recent years, cable structures have been intensively studied by many researchers all over the world. Among the known solutions of them, there are harmonic balance method (Lilien and Da Costa, 1994; Takahashi and Konishi, 1987), multiple scales method (Arafat and Nayfeh, 2003) (including discretization approach and direct approach), finite element method (Grigorjeva and Kamaitis, 2015; Wang et al, 2014a), finite difference method (Koh and Rong, 2004), numerical integration method (EI Ouni and Kahla, 2012), and experimental method (Xue et al, 2011).…”
