Numerical Analysis of the Microwave Treatment of Palm Trees Infested With the Red Palm Weevil Pest by Using a Circular Array of Vivaldi Antennas

Abstract: The Red Palm Weevil (RPW) is one of the most dangerous pests of palms in the world. Among several techniques that have been applied to combat the RPW pest such as phytosanitation, chemical insecticides, pheromone traps and biological control, the use of microwave energy for heat disinfestation seems to be a promoting solution. Its main advantages are rapid heat transfer, volumetric and selective heating, speed of switching on and off and no pollution to the environment. This paper presents the design of microw… Show more

“…In the study, the main focus was on the thermal treatment of the infested palm trees through the use of high-power microwaves. Based on the findings from [6,9], it was concluded that high-power microwaves are an effective mechanism for the reliable destruction of palm weevils. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no major developments or comprehensive studies for the identification of RPW gender type, especially with the help of low-power microwave sensors.…”

“…Different methodologies for RPW pest control and management have been developed, including but not limited to the use of physical principles of X-ray radiation [6], microwave thermal heating [7][8][9], acoustic waves and applications of signal processing [10][11][12], use of infrared thermal imaging [13,14], remote sensing imagery analysis [15,16], and the internet of things for continuous monitoring of palm trees [17]. The use of x-ray and gamma-radiation was applied in [6] in a controlled laboratory environment.…”

“…The study concluded that RPW is sensitive to incident radiation at various stages of RPW life cycle development. Microwave heating has been developed and reported by many authors using antennas for high power applications [9]. It can be inferred from many findings reported in microwave healing that treatment period of RPW adults from continuous microwave radiation at an incident power of 1 KWatt would need a minimum of 9 minutes or more depending on the insect, penetration depth and environment [9].…”

“…In most of the studies such as [20][21][22], important design parameters, such as the electrical characterization of the radiating antenna, reflection coefficient graphics, farfield radiation, SAR values on the tissue and other primary details that concern the engineers who will make the design, are not given sufficiently. In many studies showing details about the engineering aspects, publications are mostly limited to theoretical or simulation, antenna fabrication or measurements for application are not given [23][24][25][26][27] or the proposed designs are costly, far from being compact or production techniques of them are not suitable for mass production [25,26,[28][29][30]. In this study, different from the others, all details concerning electrical and electronic engineering, such as theoretical background, simulation, fabrication, and measurements related to the microwave heating and hyperthermia are presented.…”
