Numerical analysis of the vibration and noise induced by the unsteady flow in a centrifugal compressor

Abstract: Flow-induced vibration and noise widely exist in turbomachines and the connecting piping systems. The combined numerical method of computational fluid dynamics, computational structural dynamics, and computational vibroacoustics is employed to investigate the vibration and noise induced by the unsteady flow in the centrifugal compressor and pipes.Computational results indicate that the strongest pressure fluctuation is located on the clearance between the impeller and the stationary units due to the periodic r… Show more

“…Therefore, the disturbances generated from the impeller-diffuser interaction can be greatly suppressed at the compressor inlet and outlet. Moreover, the amplitude of velocity disturbances sampled from C3 is lower about one order of magnitude than that sampled from C30, this result implies that the tonal noise correlated with the blade passing frequency is mainly radiated from the compressor outlet rather than the compressor inlet, and this phenomenon has been observed in previous experimental and numerical studies, such as (Zhou et al, 2016(Zhou et al, , 2018. More analysis on this topic will be performed in Section 4.2.3.…”

“…To reveal and reduce the noise primarily generated by the freezer fan unit, Onur [14] investigated the vibration and acoustic interactions between the structure and the cavity inside the freezer cabinet, and the FEM method was also used. Zhou [15] performed a vibroacoustic analysis of a centrifugal compressor with connecting piping systems, in which the sound was induced by the unsteady flow in the centrifugal compressor and pipes, and the same FEM method was used. These studies have been of benefit in promoting the development of the research of vibrational sound radiation on structural casing, allowing for a deeper understanding of vibrational noise during the fan operation, and have provided a useful reference for the noise reduction of such machinery.…”
