Numerical Analysis on the Internal Flow Field and Adsorption Performance of a Non-Contact Vortex Gripper

Abstract: Based on the establishment of the geometry and equations of non-contact vortex gripper, the numerical analysis of the internal flow field characteristics and the key parameters affecting the adsorption performance was carried out. The results showed that: for the single air-entrance gripper, the negative pressure center not coincides at the geometric center of the gripper. Besides, with the movement of swirling flow, the position of the negative pressure center transformed; When the geometric parameters and wo… Show more

“…After the turning point (the c-d segment of F-h curve), the changing trends of F and h are contradictory, that is, h increases and F decreases because the air flows back into the vortex chamber to disturb the rotating flow. 10 This is why the next half of the F-h curve has a negative slope. The F-h curve is convex, and thus, the suction force has a maximum value (denoted as F max ).…”

“…Furthermore, the experimental and numerical simulation results by Li et al reveal that F max occurs when the peripheral pressure of the vortex chamber is equal to or less than the atmospheric pressure. 1,10 As a suction device, the suction capacity is the most important indicator of the vortex gripper, and it depends on F max . The vortex gripper is able to pick up any workpiece of weight less than F max .…”

“…The CFD results confirmed that the above changes to the internal structure of the vortex chamber can enhance the suction force to some extent. Zheng et al 18 used CFD to observe the superiority of the dual nozzle structure relative to the single nozzle structure. 18 The above findings provide guidance for the design and use of the vortex gripper.…”
