Numerical and Experimental Results for a Novel Propulsion Technology Requiring no On-Board Propellant

Abstract: A proof-of-concept (POC) prototype of a new thruster technology was experimentally and numerically tested. The technology consists of an axially-asymmetric resonating cavity that is operated with a TM 010 resonating electromagnetic (EM) wave. This new propulsion technology requires no on-board propellant to generate thrust. Numerical method analysis of the POC cavity shows that a differential in axially-directed Lorentz forces is exerted by the contained EM wave on the cavity when operated in the TM 010 mode. … Show more

“…In recent years, it has been developed intense research on the existence of anomalous thrust effects in a resonant microwave cavity [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. The investigation for understanding and enhancing the phenomenon can mean the advent of a remarkable new space propulsion technology named electromagnetic drive (EM-Drive) [5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…Basically the Cannae-Drive corresponds to a device in a pillbox shape or formed by an asymmetric capacitor with an internal dielectric. The Cannae-Drive was invented by Guido Fetta [4] as a new shape of drive to generate thrust [1,4]. In Fig.…”

“…However, later measurements with a different wire torsion pendulum did not show any thrust higher than their measurement uncertainty of 0.7 mN at a power of 230 W [20]. Fetta [21] reported thrust generated from a pancake-shaped cavity at 937 MHz with very high Q values of 10 7 just below liquid helium temperatures of around 10 mN for an input power of 10.5 W. However, his setup and measurement is poorly described. Brady et al [22] further tested Fetta's design on a torsion balance obtaining 22.5 µN with an input power of 28 W at room temperature using a standard solid-state amplifier and a PTFE dielectric at one end.…”

“…This level of force seems high enough to be measurable with a commercial precision balance which has short response time as opposed to that of the torsion pendulum [1,2]. This type of measuring instrument has already been used to detect an EMDrive force [3,7], and it allows us to develop an accurate-enough, handy, and low-cost measuring setup.…”
