Numerical and experimental results of wavefront aberration caused in a high power laser amplifier

Abstract: A model is established to analyze the wavefront aberration of a high power laser amplifier. Factors affecting the aberration are simulated. Based on the analysis, a high power laser amplification system is designed in theory and carried out in experiment. The RMS wavefront aberration under the 110 W full power pump is only 33 nm, far smaller than the wavelength 1064 nm and thus trivial as a beam quality change. We achieved 95 W output power with M 2 < 1.30 and 106 W with M 2 < 1.45 at 80 kHz. The modeling resu… Show more

“…Although only some familiar aberrations and amplitude pupils are simulated here, we believe they can also be used widely in other conditions if the amplitude is non-uniform. Moreover, although some experiments have already been conducted [23,24], further experiments on wavefront corrections will follow in the near future. Generally speaking, a pure wavefront is difficult to measure with wavefront sensors because it is often mixed with the amplitude.…”

“…The relatively low absorption coefficient of 1 µm laser for a disk-shaped gain medium is compensated by the intra-cavity pumping method [11] . Nevertheless, its poor pumping stability and strong nonlinear coupling can degrade the output laser performances significantly [13,14] . It is then difficult to study the operation characteristics of 1 µm pumped Tm:YAG disk laser in detail.…”

“…After introduction of the beam quality parameter, Siegman analyzed the influence of spherical aberration on it in [10]. The effect of different Zernike aberrations on beam quality was studied in particular in [11][12][13][14]. We discuss here the applicability limitations of a polynomial aberration approach to beam quality characterization of self-phase modulated beams.…”
