Numerical investigation of a vertical triplex‐tube latent heat storage/exchanger to achieve flexible operation of nuclear power plants

Abstract: The current numerical investigation is carried out to assess the possibility of integrating a latent heat thermal energy storage (TES) in a nuclear power plant (NPP) system. This would allow improving the capability of such plants to operate in a load-following mode by eliminating the gap between energy supply and energy demand by the grid. In contrary to previously published TES designs, the phase change material (PCM) triplex-tube containers are vertically oriented in the present study to take advantage of m… Show more

“…The use of phase change materials (PCMs) as a storage medium is advantageous for concentrated solar power technologies [13]. Mohamed Ali et al [14,15] have shown the potential of using the PCM tanks to reduce energy consumption and to overcome the problem of a mismatch between energy supply and energy demand. Recently, a solar cooling system using sensible thermal storage and evacuated tube collectors was proposed by Yadav et al [16].…”

“…Unfortunately, it is quite common for such devices to ignite, which leads to fires. In addition, when resonant phenomena occur, protective devices can be triggered, thereby reducing the reliability of the power supply (Bondarenko and Galich 2013;Ali et al 2022). Figure 16 presents graphs showing the connection of a capacitor device without throttles to a device.…”

“…The present paper focusses on LTES heat exchangers. LTES heat exchangers are developed in various geometries such as packed beds [9][10][11], corrugated plate heat exchangers [12], triplex tube heat exchangers [13], tube in tube heat exchangers [14] and perhaps most commonly shell and tube heat exchangers [15]. For all of these geometries, the design of the system first involves selecting a PCM material with an appropriate phase change temperature.…”
