Numerical investigation of inlet boundary layer skew in axial-flow compressor cascade and the corresponding non-axisymmetric end wall profiling

Abstract: This paper investigates the influence of boundary layer skew on flow structure, total pressure loss, and flow control technique numerically on a high-loaded axial-flow compressor cascade. We have developed two new models respectively about loss evaluation and end wall flow control mechanism for more specific analysis. The result shows that boundary layer skew weakens the secondary flow and delays the generation of passage vortex when incidence approaches 0°. This results in a reduction of total pressure loss m… Show more

“…The corner separation induces a large amount of flow blockage and loss; also, it is harmful to the performance of fluid machinery. [3][4][5][6] For example, it is widely known the corner separation inside the compressor may trigger the corner stall and reduce the stable range of aero-engine. A way to avoid the corner separation is to carefully design the shape of the junction and this heavily relies on the knowledge about the flow physics inside the corner region.…”

“…The numbers of nodes in some important sections are also indicated in Fig.2. The above mentioned details of the numerical model are the same as those reported in previous work [13] , in which the grid development was validated by experimental measurements after going through a grid convergence study. In this paper, the grid distribution is changed only on the span-wise direction.…”
