Numerical Investigation of Slope Stabilization Using Recycled Plastic Pins in Yazoo Clay

Abstract: Geographically, at the center of Mississippi is a concentration of High Plastic Yazoo Clay Soil (HPYCS). Shallow landslides frequently occur in embankments constructed with HPYCS caused by rainfall-induced saturation of the embankment slope. The traditional methods are becoming expensive to repair the shallow slope failure. The use of Recycled Plastic Pins (RPPs) to stabilize shallow slope failures offers a significant cost and construction benefit and can be a useful remedial measure for these types of failur… Show more

“…This strategy addresses several critical aspects related to sustainability, including the reduction in the demand for virgin materials, the minimization of solid waste generation, and the decrease in carbon dioxide emissions associated with the manufacturing of new polymeric materials [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Furthermore, the use of recycled materials in geotechnical engineering is noted for its cost-effectiveness, as it allows the use of inferior quality soils that would otherwise require costly improvement or replacement processes [ 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…These authors proposed 2D experimental and numerical models by integrating seepage flow to determine the critical slope angle to approximate the threshold of a sudden failure. In fact, different influencing factors affect the slope stability, [6][7][8][9].…”

“…For this application, previous research showed that the soil total unit weight (γ) has a limited influence on the failure load of the ground slope, [1][2][3][4][6][7][8][9][10][12][13][14][15]. In a recent study, Karoui et al, 2020, [7] investigated the stability of a deposited phosphogypsum embankment by finite element method.…”

“…This Special Issue published five original research on the latest developments and challenges in the field of transportation geomaterials, which will ensure cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable transportation infrastructures. Khan et al [6] investigated the effectiveness of recycled plastic pins (RPPs) in slopes constructed with high plastic clay soil (CH), using the finite element method (FEM). The FEM analysis was performed using the PLAXIS 2D software.…”
