Numerical Investigation on Influence of Two Combined Faults and Its Structure Features on Rock Burst Mechanism

Abstract: With the increase in coal mining depth, engineering geological conditions and the stress environment become more complex. Many rock bursts triggered by two combined faults have been observed in China, but the mechanism is not understood clearly. The focus of this research aims at investigating the influence of two combined faults on rock burst mechanisms. The six types of two combined faults were first introduced, and two cases were utilized to show the effects of two combined faults types on coal mining. The … Show more

“…It was on 20 October 2018 that a coal burst occurred in Longyun Coal Mine, in which the 174 m length long dip entry collapsed, associated with 21 workers being killed [6]. The other coal burst occurred on 9 June 2019 and was reported in the Longjiapu coal mine, resulting in the 220 m length roadway being damaged and injures to miners [7]. It was on 22 February 2020 that the coal burst occurred in the Xinjulong coal mine which also resulted in a huge loss [8].…”

“…Rock burst is a kind of dynamic failure phenomenon which often occurs in the high ground stress area of deep buried tunnels. When the mechanical equilibrium state of rock mass is broken, the accumulated energy in the rock mass is released in a sudden and violent form, resulting in a dynamic instability phenomenon [1][2][3][4][5]. The accurate assessment of rock burst grade classification is an important content of rock burst prevention measures.…”

“…Physical experiments are undoubtedly the most direct method to study the relationship between pore structure characteristics and rock mechanical properties; however, the nonhomogeneity of the microstructure and the complexity of the pore structure in coal and rock masses prevent large-scale parametric investigations. In contrast, numerical techniques have been shown to be a powerful tool for studying the mechanics of sub-surface rocks [40].…”
