Numerical Modeling of Concrete Deep Beams Made with Recycled Aggregates and Steel Fibers

Abstract: A bilinear tensile softening law that can describe the post-cracking behavior of concrete made with RCAs and steel fibers was developed based on an inverse analysis of characterization test data. Numerical simulation models were developed for large-scale concrete deep beams. The tensile softening laws along with characterization test results were used as input data in the analysis. The numerical deep beam models were validated through a comparative analysis with published experimental results. A parametric stu… Show more

“…An idealized trilinear tensile softening relationship was considered for the RCA-based concrete reinforced with BMF. The first steeper branch was assumed constant for all of the BMF-reinforced mixtures [27,31], but the slope of the next two branches varied based on the BMF content. Several iterations were conducted to determine the stress and strain values of the breaking points of the relationship at different contents of BMF, based on an inverse analysis of the flexural test results.…”

“…Numerical simulation and analysis of RC structures made with RCA and nonmetallic fibers not only requires characteristic strength data but also information about the tensile softening behavior. Such a tension function can be obtained through an inverse analysis of flexural test data of tested concrete specimens [27][28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…In order to characterize the post-cracking behavior of concrete containing steel bers and recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs), Kachouh et.al. [17] developed a bilinear tensile softening law. At the higher value of vf of 3%, the impact of a/h on the shear strength gain of the solid deep beam models decreased.…”

“…Hence, the classical elastic beam theory of bending is not applicable to deep beams. A deep beam exhibits a very complicated stress state that can be described by the strut and tie action since the mechanical behavior of deep beam is governed by shear [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. A comparison between deep beams and ordinary beams is listed in Table (A-1).…”
