Numerical Modeling Using Immersed Boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method and Experiments for Particle Manipulation under Standing Surface Acoustic Waves

Abstract: In this work, we employed the Immersed Boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method (IB-LBM) to simulate the motion of a microparticle in a microchannel under the influence of a standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW). To capture the response of the target microparticle in a straight channel under the effect of the SSAW, in-house code was built in C language. The SSAW creates pressure nodes and anti-nodes inside the microchannel. Here, the target particle was forced to traverse toward the pressure node. A mapping mechanism… Show more

“…In recent years, SAW devices have been further applied to the field of acoustofluidics [ 5 , 6 ]. Based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, SAW acoustofluidic devices can realize precise operation [ 7 ] on droplets, particles, and cells [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ] in a noninvasive, label-free, and contactless manner, making it a powerful and advanced tool in fields such as biology [ 15 ], chemistry [ 16 ], and forensic analysis [ 17 ].…”

“…The directional movement of parts is required to perform stages such as feeding, positioning, or manipulation. Typically, various manipulators [1][2][3][4][5], grippers [6,7], sophisticated robots [8][9][10], and other assembly and positioning devices are employed to implement assembly operations through passive [11][12][13], active [14][15][16][17], and hybrid [18] approaches.…”
