Numerical Modelling and Simulation of Road Crash Tests with the use of Advanced CAD/CAE Systems / Modelowanie Numeryczne I Symulacja Drogowych Testów Zderzeniowych Z Wykorzystaniem Zaawansowanych Systemów CAD/CAE

Abstract: The paper presents the methodology of numerical modelling of road crash tests based on the selected vehicle-road barrier system using the possibilities of modern CAD /CAE computing systems for a numerical simulation process of the collision. Owing to these systems, thorough analysis of the process of collision, including the analysis of the stress and strain fields and energy consumption in the tested systems, is possible. It is possible to design and redesign virtually the barriers at a relatively low cost.St… Show more

“…Previous studies dealing with friction properties and/or their impact on the obtained results are subject to two distinct limitations [ 18 , 23 , 25 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ]. First, the friction data are not consistent, and significantly different values of friction coefficients are assumed despite the simulation of similar problems.…”

“…The pole was discretized using fully integrated Lagrangian Belytschko-Tsay (BT) shell elements. For the vehicle, the widely used and deeply validated Suzuki Geo Metro FE model was adopted [ 20 , 25 , 26 , 27 ] as modified by the Department of Mechanics of Materials and Structure, Gdańsk University of Technology, Poland [ 26 ]. The model consists of 14,709 shell elements and 820 solids.…”

“…The use of computeraided software in the design of roadside safety systems and crash tests has been suggested as a result of the studies. [9][10][11] In addition to the studies mentioned above, there are many studies that have been done for the design and analysis of a security system or a part of it by using FEs such as new generation L1 containment level guardrail, 12 cable barrier system, 13 mobile anti-terror barrier, 14 and bollard systems. 15 It has been seen that the common FE program used in road restraint system (RRS) research is LS-DYNA.…”

“…Borkowski et al 20 compared the TB11 test with the real crash test and LS-DYNA FE simulation according to some criteria within the scope of EN 1317 standard and emphasized that the LS-DYNA FE model can be used. Niezgoda et al 21 in their studies on the use of computer-assisted software in modeling and simulation of crash tests, it was recommended that numerical and experimental tests largely confirm each other, and the use of computer-aided software in crash tests would be convenient. Pachocki and Wilde 22 stated in their study that the H2W5-B type steel barrier was successfully designed and tested with LS-DYNA non-linear FE program.…”
