Numerical modelling of burial and temperature history as an approach for an alternative interpretation of the Bramsche anomaly, Lower Saxony Basin

Abstract: The Lower Saxony Basin, Germany, is one of the several sedimentary basins within the Central European Basin system. In its southwestern part, anomalously high maturity of organic matter has been observed to reach 4.5% VRr in Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in an area which coincides with a magnetic and a positive gravimetric anomaly. This anomaly was often interpreted as the consequence of a deep-seated igneous intrusion, the socalled Bramsche Massif. However, results obtained from calibr… Show more

“…In particular VR r measured on DOM are typically more scattered (Scheidt & Littke, 1989). The greater dispersion of observed VR r values can be attributed to several factors, including allochthonous vitrinites of higher maturity, measurements of inertinite that could not be distinguished from vitrinite, and artefacts due to small particle size or the quality of the polished surface (Senglaub et al, 2006).…”

“…Despite substantial uplift (about 4 000 m; Senglaub et al, 2006) of this horst structure the gas is still in place and is only released upon massive formation damage due to active mining and pre-drainage activities. This is indicative of the extremely low permeability of the anthracite which constitutes a typical problem in CBM production from deep Carboniferous coal seams of the North German Basin.…”

“…Similarly, Baozhen (2006) has utilized more advanced finite-element methods to make numerical simulation; nonetheless, this method is too complex and lack of convenience. Minkyu and Daekyo (2016), Poprawa et al (2010), Gongxiang (1996), Xiaoping et al (1998), Xiaorong (2004, Paweł and Magdalena (2012), Premarathne et al (2016), Senglaub et al (2006), Galushkin et al (2014), Narkiewicz et al (2010), and Handhal et al (2014) have not considered the processing of equation-depth point, and the burial history curve charts simulated by computer software, such as PetroMod, SIGMA-2D, and GALO, have not showed the equation-depth point as well, which should be the important geological marks and not neglected.…”

“…Papers (Paweł and Magdalena 2012;Van Keer et al 1997;Senglaub et al 2006;Narkiewicz et al 2010) adopted the burial history results simulated by PetroMod software, designed in Germany, as the foundation of further researches. The SIGMA-2D basin modeling system (version 6) of the Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), which described in detail by paper (Okui 1998), was used in paper (Premarathne et al 2016), to simulate a basin's burial and thermal history along a 2D cross-section.…”
