Numerical Research of Pump-as-Turbine Performance with Synergy Analysis

Abstract: The wide use of pumps and turbines has significant value in energy conservation and utilization. In this work, a three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and a one-dimensional theoretical model of a Pump as Turbine (PAT) were established. On this basis, the correlation between pressure and velocity was quantitatively investigated by a proposed sensitivity index (SPV). A synergy field analysis was then applied to evaluate the flow characteristics of a pump and PAT, providing a perspective from… Show more

“…When compared to custom-made turbines, pumps offer several advantages, including market availability, lower investment cost, ease of manufacture, and a wide operating range [10]. Unfortunately, selecting and estimating the capacity of a pump for power-generating applications pose challenges in this field [11].…”

“…The research results of centrifugal pumps are relatively mature and systematic, while those of PAT are relatively lacking. With the intensification of global climate problems in recent years, PAT has become one of the research hotspots in the field of hydraulic machinery and energy-saving energy storage (Balacco et al, 2021;Cao et al, 2021;El-Emam et al, 2022).…”

“…Also, the results showed that the suction side of the leading edge of the blade is exposed to a lower static pressure where cavitation may occur when the back pressure of the PAT is lower than it is. 5 Maleki et al presented outcomes of their numerical investigation into the impact of viscosity on hydraulic characteristics in single-stage and multistage PAT, working in different loading conditions. Extracted characteristic curves and flow patterns for five different viscous fluids, working in turbine mode, reveal that the turbine head is affected by increasing viscosity which contributes to the reduction of hydraulic efficiency, specifically at part load flow rates.…”

“…As the flow rate is increased in reverse mode, the head and torque increase too.
