Numerical Simulation and Experimental Measurement of Residual Stresses in a Thick-Walled Buried-Arc Welded Pipe Structure

Abstract: In this study, a numerical simulation of a single pass welding of two thick-walled pipes with the buried-arc method was performed in order to determine the residual stresses caused by welding. The numerical simulation procedure in the thermal analysis was performed by the element birth and death method while the structural analysis was performed simultaneously, without the application of the element birth and death technique in order to reduce the duration of the numerical simulation. The simulation results we… Show more

“…Using the OTC Daihen Almega AX-V6 robotic welding station with the Daihen Varstroj WB-P500L power source, three steel plates of equal dimensions were welded to form an I-profile structure. The plates were produced from low-carbon steel 10025-2: S355J2+N, whose thermal and mechanical properties dependent on temperature and chemical composition were given in an earlier study [27]. The dimensions of the plates were 350 mm × 150 mm × 5 mm 3 .…”

“…As a nonlinear problem of state change, the life-and-death of the component will cause the failure or regeneration of some specified elements [36,37]. A cladding layer is a life-and-death unit, and a substrate is a non-life-and-death unit.…”

“…Assessment or measurement of residual stresses can be achieved by using a finite element method (FEM) that is in as-quenched composite blocks. A further emphasis mirrors how experimental residual stress measurements on external surfaces of the welded model can be conducted by using an X-ray diffraction technique [33]. It is reliable due to the accurate calculation of heat transfer coefficients and the established constitutive equation for the description of the variation of yield stress at elevated temperature with different strain rates.…”
