Numerical Simulation on the Radar Cross Section of Variable-Sweep Wing Aircraft

Abstract: The influence of variable-sweep wing on the aircraft's radar cross section (RCS) characteristics has been studied to reduce the aircraft's RCS as well as its detection probability by the hostile radar. With the help of CATIA, a 3-D digital model of the variable-sweep wing aircraft is built to generate a series of digital grids. Using MATLAB, a numerical simulation on the RCS of variable-sweep wing aircraft is conducted based on physical optics (PO) method and equivalent currents method (ECM). The results of ma… Show more

“…The application space was suitable to validate the methodology because micro-Doppler varies strongly with sensor aspect angle as some motions may give a severely reduced Doppler response under disadvantageous observation conditions. However, the proposed method generalizes to other applications, such as the classification of fixed-wing aircraft from characterizations of radar cross-section, which vary with sensor aspect angle [38]. The investigation of more application domains as well as the exploration of more diverse and possibly multimodal sets of classification covariates constitutes topics for future work.…”

“…El análisis de rcs hace parte de una evaluación que considera los aspectos de geometría y materiales; en este caso, mediante un análisis computacional se podrán ejecutar aproximaciones certeras a la firma de radar que el diseño planteado genera (Chen et al, 2015).…”

“…The concept of variable sweep wing was adopted for military fighter aircraft from the 1950s, primarily to achieve higher supersonic cruising speeds. The first production aircraft with sweep wing The influence of variable-sweep wing on the aircraft radar cross section (RCS) characteristics was studied to reduce the aircraft RCS, as well as its detection probability by the hostile radar [50].…”
