A centrifugal pump incorporating two inlets and a double-layered impeller is proposed for transporting a mixture of sand and water. The double-layered impeller (primary impeller) encircles a secondary impeller. To reveal the operating and flow characteristics of such a pump, numerical work is conducted with a validated numerical method. The effects of the feed rate of sand and the rotational speed of the impeller are investigated. The results show that the pump efficiency is not monotonically related to the solid volume fraction. At a feed rate of sand of 2.10 m3/min and a rotational speed of 950 rpm, the lowest pump efficiency is reached. In the volute chamber, vortices of various sizes are evidenced. With increasing rotational speed, the overall solid volume fraction in the pump decreases. Meanwhile, when the solid volume fraction attains 0.28, sand particles tend to accumulate near the outer rim of the volute chamber. The axial force acting on the primary impeller increases with the rotational speed. Under different operating conditions, the radial forces point unanimously toward the third and fourth quadrants.

To study the relationship between sediment concentration and the performance parameters of centrifugal pumps, Jiamakou water supply pumping station with total installed capacity of 30,880 kW was selected to analyze characteristics of the centrifugal pump in this paper. Based on a CFD mixture model, the effects of different sediment concentrations on the movement of solid–liquid two-phase flow and the performance parameters of the centrifugal pump were obtained. Then, fitting equations were established between performance parameters (head, flow rate, shaft power, and efficiency) of the centrifugal pump and sediment concentration at three working conditions (0.8 Q = 2 m3/s, Q = 2.5 m3/s, 1.2 Q = 3 m3/s) by the polynomial least-square method. Calculated values of fitting equations were compared with the measured values in centrifugal pump operation. The results show that, as the sediment concentration increases from 0.1% to 1%, the maximum volume fraction of sediment at blade outlet increased from 0.14% to 1.14%, and the maximum volume fraction of sediment at blade outlet increased from 0.7% to 2.29%. The turbulent kinetic energy inside the centrifugal pump increased from 8.74 m2/s2 to 10.78 m2/s2. The calculated values of fitting equation are in good agreement with the measured values in centrifugal pump operation, and the maximum errors of head, flow rate, and efficiency are 6.48%, 3.54%, and 2.87%, respectively. Therefore, the reliability of the fitting equations is verified. The research method can provide a reference for the calculation of performance parameters for centrifugal pumps in other water supply pumping stations with sediment-laden flow.

Numerical Analysis of the Sediment Erosion of the Balance Valve in a Buoyancy Regulation System

Numerical analysis of the sediment erosion of the balance valve in a buoyancy regulation system was performed. A numerical model for the two-phase flow inside the balance valve was constructed based on the discrete phase model. The sediment erosion rate on the balance valve was discussed, and the effects of five parameters were considered. The effects of the sediment concentration and valve opening were found to be significant, while the effects of the pressure difference, sediment density, and size were found to be moderate. The erosion rate, according to the numerical results, increased linearly with the sediment concentration, so long-term operation of a buoyancy regulation system in high-concentration areas should be avoided. The erosion rate was the highest when the valve opening was 46.3%, so half-open operating conditions are not recommended. The erosion rate was proportional to the square root of the pressure difference. However, adjusting the pressure difference may not be an effective method for regulating the total erosion. The superposition of the secondary flow and the main stream caused particles to spiral along with the fluid, resulting in asymmetric erosion at the working edge. The erosion rate on the working edge decreased with the increase in the sediment size. Conversely, the erosion rate on the valve ball surface increased with the sixth power of the sediment size. Considering that large particles are more likely to cause a blockage, it is recommended to install a seawater pretreatment device at the inlet to prevent large sediments from entering the valve and to improve the working life of the buoyancy regulation system.
