Background: The study of species diversity, its conservations and extinction can be done by using systematics in plant biodiversity. Poaceae is a very diverse grass family with great economic importance as it contains crops like rice, maize, oats, wheat, etc. Objectives: The current study was undertaken in district Charsadda during 2017-18 in flowering season to collect different grass species from the area. Methodology: Grass specimens were gathered, preserved, mounted and then identified from the available literature/native flora (Flora of Pakistan). Ecological parameters like habitat, class, life cycle and biological spectra were determined. A total of 51 taxa comprised of 34 genera, 5 subfamilies and 11 tribes of grasses were collected from the District Charsadda. The subfamily Panicoideae was the leading family with highest number of genera, taxa and tribes, followed by Pooideae. Results: The biological spectrum showed that in the life-form class, therophyte had the highest number of species 32 (62.74%), followed by hemicryptophyte having 13 species (25.49%). In the Leaf size class, microphylls were dominant with 24 species (47.05%) followed by nanophylls having 14 species (27.45%). The adaptational survival of plants showed that 32 species (62.74%) were terrestrial and 19 species (37.25%) were amphibious in our study. The Life-cycle class depicted that 33 species (64.70%) were annual, 17 species (33.33%) were perennial and 1 species (1.960%) was annual or perennial. The Palatability class showed that 35 species (68.62%) were highly palatable, followed by less-palatable 11 species (21.56%), non-palatable 2 species (3.921%) and moderately palatable 3 species (5.882%). The Abundant class were determined through species rating scale in ecology Acfor (Abundant Common Frequent Occasional Rare) scale to describe species abundance in a given area; 26 species (50.98%) were occasional, 12 species (23.52%) were frequent, 7 species (13.72%) were rare, 5 species (9.803%) were common and only 1 species cynodon dactylon (1.960%) was abundant in the whole area and present everywhere in the research area in every season. Conclusion: It has been concluded from the study that unwise collection, over-grazing, over-exploitation, over-consumption and overutilization are major biotic factors, which affect the diversity of the grasses in the area and affect the populations’ sustainability on the earth crust. Therefore, the study aims to document and explore wild grasses from the area, which might help in future researches. This survey will be helpful in identifying plant wealth and status for their exploitation on systematic approaches and scientific basis.

Pollen grains and caryopsis morphology of seventeen species belongs to seventeen genera, eight tribes and three subfamilies of Poaceae were studied by using light and scanning electron microscopes. Morphological characters of pollen grains and caryopsis coat are very important traits which can be used at taxonomic level. Pollen grains are mostly oblate-spheroidal, spheroidal and prolate-spheroidal while recorded six shapes elliptic, oblong, ovate, broad ovate, obovate and rounded for caryopsis. On the basis of exine ornamentations five distinct pollen types are recognized (verrucate-granulate, areolate-granulate, micro gemmate, micro gemmate-granulate and granulate) and nine different patterns for caryopsis surface coat (reticulate, rugose, scalariform, striate, reticulate -foveate, reticulate-rugose, reticulate-striate, ruminate and striate -favulariate). The size, shape, exine thickening, exine ornamentation, operculum and annulus diameter of pollen grains are very important characteristics for delimiting the species. Palynology do not support the tribal and generic classification, whereas the morphology of caryopsis is crucial for identifying the taxa in the family Poaceae.

Allelopathic effects and bio-insecticidal potential of sphaeranthus suaveolens in common bean farming in Northern Tanzania

Weeds and insect pests are amongst the serious constraints in common bean farming in most parts of Tanzania. However, weeds with allelopathic and insecticidal properties if well manipulated can be used to manage insect pests, weeds and other challenges in agriculture. Therefore, this study assessed the allelopathic effects of a weed Sphaeranthus suaveolens in common bean seed germination and seedling growth, as well as its bio-insecticidal potential in managing Acanthoscelides obtectus, an insect pest of stored legumes. Social survey to smallholder farmers in Arumeru and Moshi rural districts, seed germination and post-harvest loss experiments, as well as the phytochemical screening of secondary metabolites were conducted in order to gather local knowledge on weed and insect pest management practices, assess the allelopathic effects of different concentration of S. suaveolens crude extracts, evaluate the bio-insecticidal properties and identify the secondary metabolites present in S. suaveolens crude extract. Results showed that, insect pests and weeds were the main constraints in common bean farming and chemical spray and mechanical weeding were the main methods used by farmers to manage them respectively. Furthermore, S. suaveolens in the surveyed villages was more distributed in farmlands and swampy areas and density was high during the rainy season. Results further showed that seed germination, seedling growth and chlorophyll content of common bean seedlings were significantly affected by the high concentration of S. suaveolens crude extracts which suggests the presence of water soluble allelochemicals. Moreover, the mortality of A. obtectus in common bean seeds treated with high dose of S. suaveolens powder was higher compared with the control experiment, signifying the insecticidal properties of S. suaveolens powder and its potential in managing A. obtectus in storage facilities. Additionally, the phytochemical analysis of S. suaveolens crude revealed the presence of terpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, steroids and anthraquinones. Thus, the findings from this study showed the allelopathic effects of S. suaveolens extracts on common bean seed germination and growth, as well as potential of its powder in managing A. obtectus in storage facilities thereby reducing post-harvest loss particularly among smallholder farmers with limited access to synthetic pesticides.
