Nurse perspectives in the emergency department: The synergy tool in workload management and work engagement

Abstract: Aim To explore emergency nurses' perceptions of how a nurse‐driven patient needs assessment tool, the synergy tool, influenced their workload management. Background Quadruple Aim, particularly the fourth aim of improved staff work experiences, served as the conceptual framework to engage nurses in a participatory action research project. This project took place between 2017 and 2020 in two tertiary care emergency departments in one large Canadian city. Method This study employed a qualitative descriptive compo… Show more

“…The findings of this study support similar research with the Synergy Model: participants valued the nurse-driven patient-centered approach to this care model [5,[9][10][11]13,14]. This study further demonstrated how one tertiary care healthcare organization was able to successfully standardize the synergy patient needs assessment tool across 12 different clinical programs while adapting the synergy scoring indicators for specific patient populations, such as cardiology and neurology.…”

“…This model was originally developed for use in critical care settings in the United States, but it has since been used in a variety of healthcare sectors in the United States and other countries [5][6][7]. In Canada, the Synergy Model has been successfully used in acute care and inpatient specialty areas [8,9] and in emergency services [10,11]. The premise of this model is that synergy or best possible outcomes arise from a 'fit' between patients' needs and nursing competencies [4].…”

“…Likewise, evaluating COVID-19 responses within an organization alongside HCWs and their first-hand perspectives can inform the refinement of best practices whilst simultaneously curbing future harm amongst HCWs (Stelnicki et al, 2020). Furthermore, lessons learned from the pandemic can aid in structuring better staffing and workload management tools to improve staff work experiences (Udod et al, 2021).…”

“…Increasing complexity of consumer care across all settings in nursing creates workload challenges (Udod et al . 2021). While the clinical reality is that competing demands can make participation in research challenging, the Nominal Group Technique may be a suitable method for similar health care settings that service large geographic areas, and where taking busy clinicians away from the clinical setting requires efficient use of their time.…”
