Objective: This study aimed to determine how Turkish nursing students’ perceived nursing diagnosis. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with 655 nursing students in the Departments of Nursing in the Health Sciences Faculties of two universities, in the Aegean and western Black Sea Region, between 15 February and 5 April 2020. The Students Information Form and Perceptions of Nursing Diagnosis Scale were used for data collection. The independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA test, and the Mann-Whitney U-test with Bonferroni-correction were used to determine the differences between the groups. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the effects of independent variables Results: The mean age of the nursing students was 21.12±1.39; 76.6% of them were female and 36.8% were in the second-year. 53.7% of the nursing students reported that they had difficulty in making nursing diagnoses. The overall Perceptions of Nursing Diagnosis Survey score of the nursing students was found to be 2.46±051. Statistically significant difference was found between Perceptions of Nursing Diagnosis Survey scores in terms of gender (p=0.012), the necessity of nursing diagnosis (p<0.001), and having sufficient knowledge about nursing diagnosis (p=0.019). Conclusions: The findings of this study have revealed that Turkish nursing students’ perceptions of nursing diagnoses are positive. It is important that use effective teaching methods in teaching nursing diagnoses in fundamental nursing education, to give more importance to nursing diagnoses. It is recommended to plan qualitative studies to in-depth examine students’ perceptions with randomized controlled studies involving innovative educational interventions in the future

Standardized Nursing Diagnoses in a Surgical Hospital Setting: A Retrospective Study Based on Electronic Health Data

Introduction In electronic health records (EHRs), standardized nursing terminologies (SNTs), such as nursing diagnoses (NDs), are needed to demonstrate the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes. Unfortunately, the use of NDs is not common in clinical practice, especially in surgical settings, and is rarely included in EHRs. Objective(s) The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence and trend of NDs in a hospital surgical setting by also analyzing the relationship between NDs and hospital outcomes. Methods A retrospective study was conducted. All adult inpatients consecutively admitted to one of the 15 surgical inpatient units of an Italian university hospital across 1 year were included. Data, including the Professional Assessment Instrument and the Hospital Discharge Register, were collected retrospectively from the hospital's EHRs. Results The sample included 5,027 surgical inpatients. There was a mean of 6.3 ± 4.3 NDs per patient. The average distribution of NDs showed a stable trend throughout the year. The most representative NANDA-I ND domain was safety/protection. The total number of NDs on admission was significantly higher for patient whose length of stay was longer. A statistically significant correlation was observed between the number of NDs on admission and the number of intra-hospital patient transfers. Additionally, the mean number of NDs on admission was higher for patients who were later transferred to an intensive care unit compared to those who were not transferred. Conclusion NDs represent the key to understanding the contribution of nurses in the surgical setting. NDs collected upon admission can represent a prognostic factor related to the hospital's key outcomes.

“…En un estudio sobre las creencias y las actitudes de 239 enfermeras de AP en Cataluña, acerca del uso de los diagnósticos NANDA-I, se observan tendencias más positivas hacia su uso por parte de las enfermeras gestoras que de las asistenciales 27 . Nuestro estudio excluyó a las enfermeras directivas de AP por lo que, en este sentido, los resultados no pueden compararse, pero el citado análisis 27 también aporta datos sobre la relación con los años de experiencia indicando que, a mayor experiencia y edad de las enfermeras asistenciales, mayor utilización de los diagnósticos enfermeros. Estos resultados son contrarios a los hallados en nuestra muestra de más de 1.800 enfermeras de AP.…”

Objetivo Identificar la opinión de las enfermeras de atención primaria sobre el uso y la utilidad de los planes de cuidados y los lenguajes estandarizados tradicionales en la práctica asistencial. Diseño Estudio descriptivo, transversal, multicéntrico. Emplazamiento Equipos y dispositivos de atención primaria en Cataluña. Participantes Se estimó una muestra necesaria de 1.668 enfermeras y se aplicó una técnica de muestreo consecutivo. Intervenciones Cuestionario de acceso on-line con preguntas sobre la percepción de facilidad, utilidad y uso de los planes de cuidados y los lenguajes estandarizados tradicionales. Mediciones Estadísticos descriptivos con proporciones, medidas de tendencia central y de dispersión. La significación estadística se estableció si p ≤ 0,05. Resultados Se analizaron 1.813 cuestionarios. Las participantes opinaron que los planes de cuidados tienen un valor añadido medio, aunque su uso es con frecuencia incorrecto. Refirieron un nivel de conocimientos adecuado sobre los lenguajes estandarizados, y en su mayoría (81%) opinaron que son difíciles de emplear en la práctica y que son poco útiles para representar la prestación de cuidados y sus resultados (78%). Independientemente de su nivel académico y de los años de experiencia, valoraron como insuficiente la claridad (p = 0,058), facilidad de uso (p = 0,240) y utilidad de los lenguajes estandarizados (p = 0,039). Conclusiones Las enfermeras urgen a introducir cambios en el uso de los planes de cuidados, incluyendo el cambio de lenguaje, para mejorar los datos y la información que revierta positivamente la prestación de cuidados para la mejora de los resultados de salud de las personas beneficiarias de los servicios de atención primaria.
