Nursing home director of nursing leadership style and director of nursing-sensitive survey deficiencies

Abstract: Results supported the hypotheses that DONs using complexity leadership approaches by interacting more freely with staff, discussing resident issues, and sharing decision making produced better care outcomes from every DON sensitive metric assessed by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The mechanism linking poor quality with high DON quit intentions is an area for future research. Encouraging DON use of complexity leadership approaches has the potential to improve a broad swath of quality outcomes.

“…An autocrat leader does not involve, nor informs employees about decisions [ 42 ]. In addition, results showed that a consensus leadership style, that involves employees and encourages team decision making, was used by only 30% of DoN [ 42 , 43 ]. Given the potential influences on care quality and patient safety, our results, showing low scores on transformational leadership styles and high scores on passive-avoidant leadership styles, are alarming.…”

“…In four articles no effects were found ( Jeon et al , 2015 ; Marotta, 2010 ; Olinger, 2010 ; Westerberg and Tafvelin, 2014 ). Four papers conclude that relationship-oriented leadership results in a higher quality of care ( Castle and Decker, 2011 ; Harvath et al , 2008 ; McKinney et al , 2016 ; Westerberg and Tafvelin, 2014 ), while in one article it is concluded that a combination of task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership leads to a higher quality of care (with the emphasis on task-oriented leadership) ( Jennings et al , 2011 ). Based on their study in Sweden, Westerberg and Tafvelin (2014) present an indirect positive relationship between transformational leadership and quality of care, via mediating variables such as organizational support, support by experienced colleagues, workload and control ( Westerberg and Tafvelin, 2014 ).…”
