Nursing skills required across natural and man‐made disasters: A scoping review

Abstract: Aims To map the nursing skills required for different types of disasters. Design This was a scoping review of research studies conducted between July and August 2021. We conducted a systematic literature search of nine electronic databases from inception till July 2021, and an updated search was done in April 2022. This review is based on the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley (2005), which was further refined by the Joanna Briggs Institute. “…As frontline workers, many nurses feel unprepared to face a major disaster. [75] Our findings underscore the need to expand on disaster preparedness by addressing gaps present in emergency response associated with critical incidents and nursing. Specifically, by emphasizing BLS/ACLS skills in nursing curricula, implementing disaster drills and simulations more frequently, and engaging nurses in hospitals' disaster response policies and plans.…”

“…Disasters, whether natural, technological, or human‐induced, are defined as events with far‐reaching physical, economic, and social consequences, impacting communities and having the potential to disrupt and halt normal life, exceeding the coping capacities of local resources and infrastructure (Çilingir & Güler, 2020). Characterized by sudden and unpredictable events, disasters inflict significant damage and impact millions of people annually (Mao et al., 2022; Su et al., 2022). Among the approximately 52 types of disasters worldwide, Turkey is susceptible to an estimated 21 types.…”

“…Nurses play a pivotal and indispensable role as members of disaster response medical teams. Their experiences in navigating various challenges at each stage of the disaster provide invaluable insights for reducing the effects of disasters, implementing effective interventions, and formulating future disaster response plans (Su et al., 2022). Additionally, the evidence gathered from the disaster‐affected area serves as a fundamental basis for risk reduction, preparedness, response, recovery, and sustainable development objectives set by policymakers, governments, and nongovernmental organizations at both national and international levels (Khankeh et al., 2022).…”
