Nursing Theory, Terminology, and Big Data

Abstract: The Omaha System was employed as ontology, nursing theory, and terminology to bridge data and theory and may be considered a data-driven theorizing methodology. Novel findings suggest a relationship between psychosocial factors and incident venous ulcer outcomes. There is potential to employ this method in further research, which is needed to generate and test hypotheses from other datasets to extend scientific investigations from existing data.

“…The PGHD from mHealth apps have the ability to include individuals' perspectives. The use of data visualizations can aid in understanding relationships with multidimensional data; however, this has largely been unexplored with PGHD (Hsueh et al, 2017;Monsen, Kelechi, McRae, Mathiason, & Martin, 2018;O'Connor, Waite, Duce, O'Donnell, & Ronquillo, 2020;Woods et al, 2016;Monsen et al, 2021). This may true be because most PGHD are unstructured, not easily usable, and difficult to analyze (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2014).…”

“…Nonetheless, our previous work supports that adherence to the MUSTCOOL intervention for at least 85% of the time decreased the risk of ulcer recurrence from 18% to 7% (P = .012), and provided clinically relevant improvements in pain, cramping, ache, itch, and throb, the 5 most commonly-reported distressing symptoms associated with venous disease. 27,41 Thus we suggest nurses and other health care providers recommend the use of the cooling patch in patients with venous disease or have a recently healed VLU and with these distressing symptoms consider use of MUSTCOOL for VLU prevention and/or symptom management. Recommendations for further study in DFU patients are warranted.…”

“…It provides a comprehensive, holistic view of health from both clinical and consumer (Simplified Omaha System Terms [SOST]) perspectives, enabling researchers to examine the complexity of whole-person health (K. S. Martin, 2005;. The Omaha System may be viewed as a nested or ecological model (Supplemental Figure 1) (Monsen et al, 2018;Nordstrom, 2022;Olsen et al, 2017). MyStrengths+MyHealth (MSMH) is a consumer-facing mHealth application that employs the SOST to capture respondent strengths, challenges, and needs (R. R. .…”

“…It provides a comprehensive, holistic view of health from both clinical and consumer (Simplified Omaha System Terms [SOST]) perspectives, enabling researchers to examine the complexity of whole‐person health (K. S. Martin, 2005; Monsen et al., 2021). The Omaha System may be viewed as a nested or ecological model (Supplemental Figure 1) (Monsen et al., 2018; Nordstrom, 2022; Olsen et al., 2017). This model depicts nested layers in which whole‐person health factors within the Physiological (My Body) domain are nested within the Health‐related Behaviors (My Self‐care) domain, which is in turn nested within of the Psychosocial (My Mind and Networks) domain; and all of which are nested within the Environmental (My Living) domain (Chambers et al., 2007; Kim et al., 2022; Sierra‐García et al., 2022).…”
