Nutraceuticals and migraine: further strategy for the treatment of specific conditions

Abstract: Nutraceuticals might be defined as food or dietary supplements that provide medicinal or health benefits. Current preventive treatment of migraine includes nutraceuticals as well as conventional drugs. These non-pharmacological therapies, such as magnesium, coenzyme Q10, feverfew, riboflavin, and phycocyanins, are particularly useful in certain categories of patients (adolescents, pregnant or breastfeeding women, the elderly with complex drug therapy, the patient with contraindication to the usual pharmacologi… Show more

“…Migraine is considered a threshold disease induced by a brain-related trigger, and some dietary nutrients are considered as such triggers (reviewed in [ 8 , 12 ]). However, some other nutrients, including nutraceuticals, may play a role in migraine prevention and prophylaxis [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Although many papers suggest an important role of diet modifications in migraine prevention and treatment, these suggestions lack a strong evidence base (reviewed in [ 17 ]).…”

“…Many food supplements and nutraceuticals have been studied in relation to nervous disease treatment and prevention. Magnesium, coenzyme Q10, feverfew, riboflavin, and phycocyanins have shown modest efficacy but a very good safety and tolerability profile in migraine treatment [38]. Diets with a low nutrient density are linked to a higher risk of cognitive decline [39].…”

“…For instance, it has been proposed that dietary nutrients may alter the level and function of CGRP, and CGRP may influence food intake [80]. Therapeutic nutritional recommendations are expected to be adjusted to patient needs, for example, for children, adolescents [81], pregnant or nursing women, and geriatrics with migraine [82]. Behavior change strategies considering other lifestyle factors in addition to the diet (e.g., sleep, stress, and exercise) seem essential to be implemented in future plans [83 ▪ ].…”
