“…We selected claims about fiber because of the following: (1) the American Dietetic Association has highlighted inadequate fiber intake as a critical nutrition concern for this age group (American Dietetic Association, ); (2) diets high in fiber tend to be low in fat (Niklas et al , ); (3) fiber plays an important role in decreasing the risk of obesity and other chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and colon cancer (American Dietetic Association, ); (4) claims about fiber are prevalent in the cereal category; and (5) children's knowledge of fiber is lower than their knowledge about other ingredients, such as sugar, fat, and calories (Murphy et al , ), which increases the likelihood that the claim would provide new information and thus have a larger impact on choice.…”

“…This optimum time for nutrition education has been identified as between the ages of 8-12 years. Since lifelong eating patterns and habits are formed during these years of development, preventive measures like nutrition education can encourage children to improve their dietary habits (Winter, Stanton and Bousley, 1999;Kelder et al, 1994;Murphy et al, 1994;Shannon, Graves and Hunt, 1982). Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the effect of a three-week school-based nutrition education program on the nutrition knowledge and healthy food choices of fifth graders.…”

“…Therefore, nutrition intervention is most successful prior to the junior high school years (Winter, Stanton and Bousley, 1999;Murphy et al, 1994;Splett and Story, 1991;Shannon, Graves and Hunt, 1982). This optimum time for nutrition education has been identified as between the ages of 8-12 years.…”
