Vitamins are nutritional elements which are necessary for essential activities such as development, growth, and metabolism of cells. In addition to these conventional functions, vitamins A, D, E, and C have vital roles in normal function of the immune system as their deficiency is known to impair innate and adaptive host responses. By altering transcription of multiple immune system genes and contributing to antioxidant activities, these vitamins influence the immune system in different ways including modulation of cell-mediated and antibody-mediated responses, immunoregulation, and antiinflammatory effects. Furthermore, supplementation of these vitamins to poultry may assist the immune system to combat microbial pathogens while reducing detrimental effects associated with stress and enhancing responses to vaccines. In this article, the relationship between the chicken immune system and vitamins A, D, E, and C is reviewed, and evidence from the literature pertaining to how these vitamins exert their antiinflammatory, regulatory, and antimicrobial effects is discussed.

Hen-Day Egg Production and Qualitative Egg Indices in Laying Hens Administered with Lycopene and Vitamin E During the Hot-Dry Season

The aim of the study was to evaluate the ameliorative effects of lycopene and vitamin E, administered individually and in combination, on laying hens during the hot-dry season. The dry-and wet-bulb temperature were recorded daily from 06:00–18:00 h during the 5-week experimental period. Daily and weekly hen-day egg productions, egg weight, eggshell thickness and eggshell weight were determined using standard procedures. The dry-bulb temperature (23.0°C – 39.0°C) and temperature - heat index (24.4°C − 35.0°C) recorded show that the hens were subjected to heat stress during the season. Egg production in the laying hens in lycopene (62.4 ± 1.1 %), vitamin E (62.1 ± 1.2%) and lycopene + vitamin E (62.7 ± 1.0 %) groups were higher (P < 0.05) than in controls (56.0 ± 0.8%). Eggshell was thickest in lycopene + vitamin E group (0.28 ± 0.02 mm), compared to lycopene (0.23 ± 0.02 mm) and vitamin E group (0.22 ± 0.02 mm). The thickness was lowest (P < 0.05) in control hens (0.18 ± 0.02 mm), compared to any other group. Similarly, control laying hens recorded the least (P < 0.05) in eggshell weight (6.7 ± 0.02 g), compared to the weights recorded in lycopene + vitamin E, lycopene and vitamin E groups (7.3 ± 0.24 g, 7.3 ± 0.3 g and 7.2 ± 0.3 g, respectively). In conclusion, lycopene and vitamin E ameliorated the risk of adverse effects of heat stress by increasing hen-day production, eggshell weight and eggshell thickness during the hot-dry season.

Σκοπός της παρούσης διατριβής ήταν η αναλυτική καταγραφή της υφισταμένης ζωοτεχνικής και οικονομικής διαχείρισης που εφαρμόζεται στις πτηνοτροφικές εκμεταλλεύσεις κρεοπαραγωγικής κατεύθυνσης στην Περιφέρεια Ηπείρου. Η αποτύπωση της υφιστάμενης κατάστασης έγινε μέσω (α) της διερεύνησης των σημαντικότερων ζωοτεχνικών και οικονομικών χαρακτηριστικών της εκτροφής ορνιθίων κρεοπαραγωγής που επιδρούν στην οικονομικότητα και παραγωγικότητα του κλάδου (β) της διαμόρφωσης μίας τυπολογίας που αφορά στο δομικό χαρακτηρισμό του παραγωγικού συστήματος και (γ) του προσδιορισμού της τεχνικής αποτελεσματικότητας (ΤΕ) και της αποτελεσματικότητας κλίμακας (SE) των εκμεταλλεύσεων ορνιθίων κρεοπαραγωγής. Η καταγραφή των μεταβλητών έγινε με βάση τα δεδομένα που προκύπτουν από ένα στρωματοποιημένο τυχαίο δείγμα, κατά Neyman, 110 πτηνοτροφικών εκμεταλλεύσεων. Η στρωμάτωση έγινε σε επίπεδο Περιφερειακής Ενότητας (Π.Ε.), ανά τάξη μεγέθους και μέσω του καναλιού διάθεσης των σφαγιασθέντων ορνιθίων. Τα πρωτογενή δεδομένα συγκεντρώθηκαν μέσω ερωτηματολογίων καταγραφής των κυριότερων χαρακτηριστικών κάθε εκμετάλλευσης που αφορούσαν (α) στις εφαρμοζόμενες διαχειριστικές πρακτικές, (β) τα οικονομικά στοιχεία και (γ) το προσωπικό προφίλ του ιδιοκτήτη κάθε εκμετάλλευσης. Οι μέθοδοι στατιστικής ανάλυσης που εφαρμόστηκαν για την επεξεργασία των δεδομένων περιλάμβαναν μία σειρά σταδίων προοδευτικής εξέλιξης. Η ανάλυση οικονομικότητας ανέδειξε ότι το μέσο ετήσιο κόστος διατροφής ανέρχεται σε ποσοστό 71,05% επί του συνόλου του μεταβλητού κεφαλαίου ή στο 62,29% επί των συνολικών δαπανών. Επίσης, τα οικονομικά αποτελέσματα της μέσης εκμετάλλευσης υποδεικνύουν ότι υπάρχει χαμηλή αποδοτικότητα κεφαλαίου (18,98%) και το καθαρό κέρδος αντιστοιχεί σε οικονομική ζημία και ανέρχεται σε -16.678,36 €. Τεχνικοί δείκτες όπως ο συντελεστής μετατρεψιμότητας της τροφής, η μέση θνησιμότητα, η μέση διάρκεια πάχυνσης και το μέσο βάρος σφαγής αποτιμούνται ως ικανοποιητικοί, ενώ η μεταβλητή ετήσιες τοποθετήσεις ως υπο-χρησιμοποιούμενη. Τέλος, η ανάλυση παραγωγικότητας αποτίμησε ως νεκρό σημείο τα 1,17 ευρώ ανά κιλό ζώντος βάρους ορνιθίου. Από την ιεραρχική ανάλυση συστάδων εντοπίστηκαν τέσσερις ομάδες διαφορετικών τύπων εκμεταλλεύσεων. Πρώτον, προσδιορίστηκε μια ομάδα με μεσαίου μεγέθους εκτροφές που παρουσιάζει καλά παραγωγικά χαρακτηριστικά και μικρές σχετικά επενδύσεις σε πάγιο κεφάλαιο που περιορίζουν τις φιλοδοξίες για επίτευξη καλύτερης κερδοφορίας. Δεύτερον, αναδείχθηκε μία μη βιώσιμη και σχετικά ανταποδοτική ομάδα μικρών εκμεταλλεύσεων με ελάχιστες επενδύσεις πάνω στην εργασία τους. Η τρίτη ομάδα που αφορούσε σε πολύ μεγάλου μεγέθους σύγχρονες εκμεταλλεύσεις παρουσίαζε τη χαμηλότερη αποδοτικότητα του υψηλού επενδεδυμένου κεφαλαίου που σχετιζόταν με την πολύ κακή επίδοση στο συντελεστή μετατρεψιμότητας τροφής. Τέλος, η ομάδα των μεγάλων και εκσυγχρονισμένων εκμεταλλεύσεων απέχει ελάχιστα από την επίτευξη κερδοφορίας στην περίπτωση που θα εκμεταλλευτεί καλύτερα τον ετήσιο παραγωγικό της κύκλο. Η πρώτη ανάλυση DEA ανέδειξε τον FCRκαι το «μέσο επενδυθέν κεφάλαιο» ως τις καθοριστικές μεταβλητές ταξινόμησης των εκμεταλλεύσεων σε αποτελεσματικές ή μη αποτελεσματικές. Από τη δεύτερη ανάλυση DEA προέκυψε ότι η συνολική κατανάλωση τροφής βελτίωσε τον FCR των αποτελεσματικών εκμεταλλεύσεων, δίχως να παρουσιάζουν παράλληλα υψηλότερο μέσο επενδυθέν κεφάλαιο σε σχέση με τις μη αποτελεσματικές εκμεταλλεύσεις. Συνοψίζοντας, το παραγωγικό σύστημα της εκτροφής κρεοπαραγωγών ορνιθίων στην Ήπειρο είναι εντατικό και αρκούντως αποτελεσματικό ειδικά στις μεγάλου μεγέθους εκμεταλλεύσεις που έχουν κάνει σοβαρές επενδύσεις σε πάγιο κεφάλαιο και εφαρμόζουν επιτυχημένη διαχείριση της εκτροφής τους. Γενικότερα όμως ο κλάδος της κρεοπαραγωγού πτηνοτροφίας στην Ήπειρο έχει περαιτέρω περιθώρια βελτίωσης τόσο της παραγωγικότητας, όσο και της κερδοφορίας του.
