Nutritional factors and rest reduce pregnancy‐induced hypertension and pre‐eclampsia in positive roll‐over test primigravidas

Abstract: This protocol reduces PIH and pre-eclampsia in primigravidas judged to be at risk of hypertension. Further studies are required to evaluate prostacyclin and prostaglandin E2 changes.

“…On the other hand, it is interesting to note that previous reports in Colombian pregnant women demonstrated an important association between nutritional deficiencies (calcium, micronutrients, and fatty acids) and PE 27 . Nowadays, in a similar population, not only was there no association between calcium and PE development, but also, we found an association between fiber and vitamin C consumption and PE development.…”

“…Using a 2‐sided test it was calculated that, with a statistical power of 80% at the 5% significance level, 24 women at high risk of developing PIH were needed per group to demonstrate statistical significance with a relative reduction of 75% in the rate of PIH (from 50% to 13%). Assumptions were based on previous studies that demonstrated a high incidence of PE in women with a diastolic notch and a beneficial effect of calcium–CLA supplementation [10,11,16]. The Shapiro–Wilk test was used to assess the normality of continuous data.…”

“…An insufficient calcium intake has been one of the most studied conditions associated with PIH [5,6]. However, the results of different clinical trials using calcium supplementation to prevent PIH have been contradictory [7–15].…”

“…They were advised to rest at home in left lateral position for 15 minutes twice daily, and nutritional supplementation 3 times/week orally with soy protein 25 g, calcium 300 mg, and linoleic acid 300 mg, until delivery. Rest of 30 minutes per day plus nutritional supplementation was associated with a reduction in the risk of preeclampsia (RR 0.13, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.51) and also of gestational hypertension (RR 0.15, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.63) [33]. Higgins et al [28] reported that women with normal blood pressure in their first pregnancy who were in paid employment had higher blood pressure and higher risk of developing preeclampsia than those who were not in paid employment.…”
