Nutritional status and mortality of patients in regular dialysis therapy

Abstract: The relationship between mortality and nutritional status of 48 chronic dialysis patients (32 patients on haemodialysis (HD) and 16 on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)) was studied over a 24-month period. Patients were scored individually according to relative body weight (RBW), S-transferrin, mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) and triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), and were given a total score from 0 (normal nutritional status) to 8 (severe protein-caloric malnutrition) at start of observation… Show more

“…19 Long term maintenance haemodialysis has revolutionized the care of terminally ill renal failure patients. 20 Malnutrition in these patients may be attributed to anorexia due to uremic toxins, inter current illnesses, psychological and social factors and due to inadequacy of dialysis procedure itself. 21 In our study 78% were males, 62% of them were illiterate and more than 50% were involved in the daily wage labour work.…”

“…De fato, a desnutrição energético-protéica é uma condição freqüente e apresenta uma estreita relação com a morbidade e a mortalidade nos pacientes com DRC [3][4][5] . Dessa forma, esforços vêm sendo realizados no sentido de melhor compreender os fatores envolvidos na condição nutricional desses pacientes e contribuir não somente para a redução das taxas de mortalidade, mas também para a melhoria da qualidade de vida dos mesmos 6,7 .…”

“…An association of low albumin levels with increased mortality and morbidity in hemodialysis patients has been hypothesized. (7,8) Some studies show dialysis is associated with chronic inflammation in the form of increase in CRP levels. This increases in CRP levels was shown to be associated with higher mortality risk in CKD-HD Patients.…”
