Nutritional status of haemodialyis patients: a French national cooperative study

Abstract: This study showed life-threatening undernutrition in 20-36% of the studied population, according to nutritional parameters. Protein intake (estimated by nPCR) and dialysis efficacy (estimated by dialysis time and KtV) appeared to be major determinants of nutritional status in this population.

“…Mancini et al 58 and Valenzuela et al 45 have also considered as malnourished patients with BMI lower than 18.5 kg/m 2 , and, according to that criterion, they have reported incidences of malnutrition of 12.8% and 4.0%, respectively. Stenvinkel et al 59 and Aparicio et al 60 have considered to be low a BMI under 20 kg/m 2 . The choice of a BMI cutoff point of 18.5 kg/ m 2 for the dialysis population can be questioned, because patients with a BMI lower than 22 kg/m 2 already seem to be at a greater risk of mortality.…”

“…49 Better nutritional status is related to prolonged survival. 50,51 Malnutrition appears also to correlate with cardiovascular complications and cardiovascular death when on dialysis, although it is not clear whether this reflects a cause-effect relationship.…”
