Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium L.), a native herbaceous perennial, occurs across most of Canada. It is particularly abundant on recently disturbed ground in coniferous or mixed forest ecosystems and is a common weed of roadsides and waste areas, especially in areas with acidic soils. In some successionally advanced vegetation, however, widely spaced colonies with low stem densities may persist for long periods. Where growth of the species is prolific, seedling establishment of commercially important coniferous trees can be suppressed and the species can be a problem in perennial crops.Key words: Epilobium angustifolium, fireweed, fire, forest succession, forest weeds

Im Wuchsbezirk „Oberpfälzer Jurarand”︁ wurde 1964 ein Meliorationsversuch in einem ehemals streugenutzten Kiefernbaumholz III, 8. Bonität auf Podsol‐Pseudogley aus toniger Kreideverwitterung mit Staublehmdecke angelegt; er umfaßt die Versuchsglieder: NPKCaMg‐Düngung, N‐Düngung 3 mal wiederholt (I‐‚ Volldüngungsvariante’︁); PKCaMg‐Düngung mit 20 cm tiefer Fräsung (II‐‚ Fräsvariante’︁); PKCaMg‐Düngung, 20 cm tiefes Fräsen und Lupineneinsaat (III‐‚Lupinenvariante’︁); Kontrolle (O). In der 15. Vegetationsperiode nach Versuchsbeginn, bzw. 6 Jahre nach der letzten N‐Düngung wurden die Wirkungen der Meliorationen auf N‐Nettomineralisation (Freilandmethode) und aktuelle Mineralstickstoffvorräte untersucht. Die durchschnittliche N‐Nettomineralisationsrate im Oberboden zeigte folgende Abstufung: Kontrolle 100% – Fräsvariante 114% – Volldüngungsvariante 400% – Lupinenvariante 628%. Eine signifikant positive, lineare Korrelation ergab sich zum N‐Ernährungszustand der Kiefern; die absoluten Mineralisationswerte lagen aber aus methodischen Gründen niedriger als die tatsächliche Nmin‐Nachlieferung. Die Nitrifikation stieg sowohl auf der Volldüngungs‐ als auch auf der Lupinenvariante deutlich an. Auf der Volldüngungsvariante war die Mineralisation im Auflagehumus, auf der Lupinenvariante hingegen im Mineralboden gesteigert. Die Lupinenvariante zeichnete sich durch einen sehr geringen aktuellen Nmin‐Vorrat zu Beginn der Vegetationsperiode, aber eine stürmische N‐Mineralisation im Frühjahr aus. Die höchsten aktuellen Nmin‐Vorräte im Oberboden ließen sich auf allen Versuchsgliedern in den Sommermonaten nachweisen. Zumindest auf den Meliorationsvarianten war ein Rückgang im Spätsommer und ein erneuter leichter Anstieg im Herbst statistisch zu sichern.
