Nutritional treatment for acquired immunodeficiency virus infection using an enterotropic peptide-based formula enriched with n-3 fatty acids: a randomized prospective trial

“…In conclusion, as a fish oil-rich supplement has no adverse effect on T-cell counts in these or other studies of individuals infected with HIV or positive for AIDS (Pichard et al 1998;de Luis Roman et al 2001;Keithley et al 2002), this intervention appears to be safe in HIV infection and AIDS. Although there appears to be no consistent effect of fish oil supplementation on systemic cytokine production in patients infected with HIV or positive for AIDS, to date there are no data available on the effect of EPA + DHA enrichment on local markers of inflammation in the intestinal mucosa.…”

“…During catabolism in sepsis and burns, feeding excess calories has resulted in increasing energy expenditure and futile utilization of fuel with resultant fat deposition without increasing lean mass [1922]. Our participants were largely underserved and we did not assess quantity or quality of calories that they consumed, which may have been predominantly fat or carbohydrate (not protein) during treatment and attenuation of inflammation.…”

“…For example, omega-3 fatty acid supplementation has been shown to reduce triglyceride levels in patients receiving antiretroviral [36, 37]. Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation has also been shown to increase CD4 cell count as demonstrated [38, 39]. To our knowledge, therefore, no previous studies had been undertaken on the effect of fish oil omega-3 fatty acids on depressive symptoms among HIV-infected pregnant women.…”
