Nutritional values of flamboyant (Delonix regia) seeds obtained in Akure, Nigeria

Abstract: The nutritional and antinutritional compositions (phytochemical, proximate, mineral, digestibility, functional properties, phytate, tannins and oxalate.) of Delonix regia seed were determined. The results showed that the sample, has high protein content, Ca, Na, Mg, K and Fe. it would be advisable to properly process the seed before consumption. The implications of the results were discussed.

“…Its branches spread like an umbrella, providing shade beneath the parent tress and as such, it has become one of the important and widely cultivated ornamental trees grown in the tropics and some other parts of the world [20]. Flamboyant is characterised with corymbs, 15-30 cm long, and bear five equal petals fragrant flowers [21]. The corymbs matured, after fertilisation, to produce, strapshaped and flattened pod (30-70 cm long), which houses about 50 leguminous seeds.…”

“…Abulude and Adejayan investigated the nutritional value of D. regia and advised that despite the presence of bioactive substances, the seeds should be properly processed due to antinutrients. D. regia is rich in protein and can serve as a substitute for groundnut cake in poultry feed . Gums extracted from D. regia seed makes it potentially resourceful in the food industry…”
