Nutritional Vulnerability of Older Persons Living in Urban Areas of Lake Victoria Basin in East Africa: A Cross Sectional Survey

Abstract: The aim of this study was to (1) determine the prevalence of malnutrition and (2) investigate factors affecting nutritional status of older persons living in urban areas of Lake Victoria Basin. The prevalence of underweight was 16.5%, with men (24.1%) being significantly more likely to be underweight (P < 0.05) than women (12.3%). Overall, 61.2% had normal body mass indices, 13.2% were overweight, and 9.1% were obese. Energy intake was low (1596.3-1630.5 Kcal), with only 22% and 38% of men and women, respectiv… Show more

“…Other studies also recorded the prevalence of malnutrition in older persons to be 6% [ 5 ] and 25.3% [ 1 , 45 ] and 39% [ 28 ]. Of these studies, 12 provided data on undernutrition, with prevalence ranging from 2.9 to 41% ([ 1 4 , 12 , 14 , 15 , 19 , 24 , 30 , 38 , 55 ]). Ten studies provided data on overweight, with the studies recording 54.1% [ 1 ], 21% [ 3 ] and 8.1% [ 38 ] prevalence of overweight.…”

“…Ten studies provided data on overweight, with the studies recording 54.1% [ 1 ], 21% [ 3 ] and 8.1% [ 38 ] prevalence of overweight. Obesity was assessed in 5 studies, ranging from 2.7 to 44.7% [ 12 , 14 , 15 , 24 , 30 ] (see Table 1 ).…”

“…Despite a global increase in obesity it may be that in such settings, older people are at an increased risk from undernutrition, due to food and income insecurity. A cross-sectional study conducted in urban Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania described the majority of older adults as being “nutritionally vulnerable” due to problems accessing food [ 34 ]. As a consequence, the relationship between frailty and chronic undernutrition is likely to be stronger in rural SSA than might be seen in HICs and warrants further investigation.…”

“…Undernutrition is also present in older persons residing in urban areas. Underweight prevalence in the urban areas of Lake Victoria Basin in East Africa was 24·1 % among older men and 12·3 % among older women ( 17 ) . Only 22 % of older men and 28 % of older women met their daily energy requirements; This was attributed to inadequate access to food, improper eating patterns and poor health and living arrangements.…”
