Nylon cloth macular amyloidosis

Abstract: In primary localized cutaneous amyloid, deposition of amyloid is confined to the skin without the involvement of any internal organs. Amyloid deposition in the skin is often scanty, and electron microscopy may be needed to confirm the presence of the typical amyloid fibrils. There have been several case reports of cutaneous amyloidosis associated with friction or rubbing of the skin. We report a case of primary localized cutaneous amyloid associated with the habitual use of a nylon cloth.

“…Similar features of thinning of epidermis, moderate acanthosis and hyperkeratosis, focal distribution of the basal layer with pigmentary incontinence as observed by us have been consistently described. [24273839] Amyloid on H&E stain shows amorphous eosinophilic masses and small deposits of amyloid can be missed with routine H&E stains. [39] Congo red produces an apple green birefringence under a polarizing microscope and is the most specific stain for detection of amyloid.…”

“…This suggests that genetic, environmental and even cultural factors may be implicated in PCA. 7 This type of amyloidosis is more frequent in females, particularly those in the 21-to 50-year age range, suggesting that hormonal factors may be involved in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. 2 The patient described here is South American and lies in this age range.…”
