Nyloprint‐sensitive patients react to NN' methylene bis acrylamide

Abstract: Two patients showed occupational contact sensitization to a component present in the Nyloprint photopolymer printing plate. The component could not be identified chemically. It contains an acrylamide group. Both patients gave group-specific reactions to NN' methylene bis acrylamide. This must be a closely realted substance. Possible preventive measures are discussed. The manufacturer should have disclosed the allergic substance and instructed his customer adequately. A "philosophy" concerning this point is bei… Show more

“…It is interesting to note that this measure is of prime interest not only in preventing housewives' dermatitis but also in occupational dermatology, since eau de Javel is used on a large scale for cleaning or antiseptic purposes. Malten (1978) considers that in the prevention of occupational dermatoses there are 10 levels of possible action to avoid contact between the working material and the worker. By removing chromate from eau de Javel, the French Trade Society of producers has acted at two different levels: level 1, "suppression of allergen" and level 10, "instruction, discussion, supervision".…”

“…Piperazine diacrylamide, a cross-linker of acrylamide gel electrophoresis, can also sensitize (Bjorkner 2006). Secondary acrylamides such as N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBAA), have been identified as sensitizers in photo polymerizing printing plates (Malten et al 1978;Pedersen et al 1982;Pedersen et al 1983). Patients sensitized to the secondary acrylamides used in Nyloprint ® printing plates may react to acrylamide on patch testing (Pedersen et al 1982).…”
