Nystroemiaceae, a new family of Permian gymnosperms from China with an unusual combination of features

Abstract: Nystroemiaceae is proposed as a new family of gymnosperms from the Permian of Cathaysia that adds to the diversity of gymnosperms known from this critical time in seed plant evolution. This family is characterized by bifurcating and highly branched pinnate ovuliferous organs bearing bicornute ovules (seeds) and entire leaves with anastomozing veins that are born on complex and modern-looking branching systems with clear axillary branching. The reconstruction is based on numerous large specimens from two locali… Show more

“…This group was subsequently adjusted from the primary literature (R€ ossler and Galtier, 2002;Hilton et al, 2004;Tomescu et al, 2006;Kustatscher et al, 2007, in press;Shi et al, 2010;Decombeix et al, 2011;Galtier et al, 2011;Cariglino et al, 2012;Cariglino, 2013;Wang et al, 2014). Gymnosperm data were extracted from Cleal (1993b) and Anderson et al (2007) with modifications from Cleal and Shute (2003), Uhl (2004), Kustatscher et al (2007), Wang et al (2007), Wang and Pfefferkorn (2010) and Pott (in press). For angiosperms, we firstly consulted Collinson et al (1993), which was then updated following Friis et al (2011).…”

“…Specimens were collected from Mengjiagou village in Shouyang district (Fig. 1) of the Taiyuan East Hill Coalfield in Shanxi Province, occurring in the upper part of the Upper Shihhotse Formation (Wang and Pfefferkorn, 2010). The sedimentary succession, shown in Figure 2a and is summarized in Table 1, is dominated by red-beds (arrows in Fig.…”

“…The plant fossil record continues to yield evidence that the gymnosperms living today are only a small segment of the total diversity of gymnosperm lineages that existed before the rise of flowering plants during the Mesozoic (Taylor 1976;Anderson and Anderson 2003;Naugolnykh 2008;Gordenko 2010;Wang and Pfefferkorn 2010). Among the numerous extinct gymnosperm clades, the Peltaspermales was a particularly successful and diverse group of seed ferns that existed from the Late Carboniferous until the end of the Triassic (Taylor et al 2006).…”
