OA-GL21, a novel bioactive peptide from Odorrana andersonii, accelerated the healing of skin wounds

Abstract: Nowadays, the number of chronic trauma cases caused by a variety of factors such as the world’s population-ageing and chronic diseases is increasing steadily, and thus effective treatment for chronic wounds has become a severe clinical challenge, which also burdens the patient both physically and financially. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new drugs to accelerate the healing of wounds. Bioactive peptides, which are relatively low cost, easy to produce, store and transport, have become an excellent choice. … Show more

“…Currently, identifying animal peptides with healing properties opens a new perspective for the treatment of skin wounds [ 16 , 32 , 34 ]. In general, reviewed studies indicate that peptides originating from mammals, amphibians, fishes, jellyfish, mollusk, and insect exert beneficial effects in stimulating wound closure.…”

“…Due to its antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, promitotic, colagenogenic, and neoangiogenic potential, animal peptides are suggested as promising agents for new therapeutic approaches in skin wound treatment [ 1 , 12 , 15 , 16 ]. Besides, their molecular abundance, low cost of isolation techniques, high molecular stability, and their broad spectrum of biological properties are also encouraging characteristics.…”

“…The OA-GL21 (Table 1) peptide isolated from by Odorrana andersonii exerts the ability to promote the WH of human keratinocytes and human fibroblasts in a dose- and time-dependent manner, mainly by promoting cell migration rather than inducing cell proliferation [34].…”

“…In a mouse model with deep skin wounds, Cathelicidin-OA1 accelerates re-epithelialization and granulation tissue formation by enhancing the recruitment of macrophages to the wound site, with effects comparable to those exerted by epidermal growth factor (EGF). TNF-α, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, can be upregulated by peptides in the early phase of inflammation during WH, thus becoming responsible for recruiting inflammatory cells to the wound site and exerting predominant chemotactic functions [34].…”
