Oat cell carcinoma of the lung:A review of 138 cases

Abstract: All cases seen during the 11 years from 1956 through 1966 are reviewed. They comprised 10% of the bronchogenic cancer population. Males predominated 19:1. There was no positive correlation with cigarette smoking. In most of the patients symptoms were present less than 3 months before diagnosis. Only four patients (3.0%) had overt hypercoticism. Histologic confirmation was easily obtained; bronchoscopic biopsy was positive in 60% of the cases. Our operability rate (60%) and resectability rate (27%) are almost a… Show more

“…A systematic review by COORY et al [3] identified only one randomised trial [13] including SCLC investigating the impact of MDTs. Despite lacking evidence for SCLC, evidence from breast, head-and-neck and rectal cancer has demonstrated that MDTs can reduce rates of positive surgical margins, reduce costs, improve patient satisfaction, improve documentation regarding TNM (tumour, nodes, metastasis) staging or performance status and even decrease the time from diagnosis to treatment [5,[14][15][16][17].…”

“…1 SCLC is characterized by a rapid doubling time, high growth fraction, paraneoplastic endocrinopathies, and early development of widespread metastases: at diagnosis, approximately two-thirds of patients have extensive-stage disease (ED). 1,2 Combination chemotherapy guarantees a high objective response rate but progression-free survival (PFS) is disappointing and long-term overall survival (OS) remains usually < 12 months. 3,4 Cisplatin (P) and etoposide (E) is the most used chemotherapy regimen in SCLC.…”
