Obesity and the four facets of impulsivity

Abstract: Obesity is a complex condition involving biological, psychological, sociocultural and environmental components. Impulsivity seems to be a particularly important factor. Whiteside and Lynam recently proposed dividing impulsivity into four separate dimensions: Urgency, lack of Premeditation, lack of Perseverance and Sensation Seeking (associated with a tendency to exaggerate the impact of rewards). The objective of this article is to examine how obesity and eating disorder symptoms may be related to the four fac… Show more

“…A third domain of potential relevance is impulsivity, a construct recognized as a predisposing factor in multiple addictive behaviours, including some eating disorders (Volkow and Wise 2005;Mobbs et al 2010;Dalley et al 2011;Volkow et al 2013). For example, a high impulsive trait has been described in some obese subjects and, in particular, individuals with eating conditions such as binge eating disorder (BED) (Mobbs et al 2010;Schag et al 2013;Smith and Robbins 2013).…”

In rat models, individuals with high trait impulsivity are more likely to relapse to drug seeking behaviour following reexposure to drug-associated cues relative to their less impulsive counterparts (Pattij and De Vries 2013;Dalley et al 2011).…”

“…As obesity is associated with increased impulsivity and reduced impulse control (Davis, 2010;Gruss, Mueller, Horbach, Martin, & de Zwaan, 2012;Lent & Swencionis, 2012;Mobbs, Crepin, Thiery, Golay, & Van der Linden, 2010;Müller et al, 2012;van Hout, van Oudheusden, & van Heck, 2004), one might expect elevated prevalence rates of ICDs or behavioral addictions among bariatric surgery patients. ICDs have been shown to be relatively prominent in obese, pre-bariatric surgery candidates.…”
