Obesity, gestational diabetes and macrosomia are associated with increasing rates of early‐term induction of labour at The Canberra Hospital

Abstract: The burden of GDM and early-term IOL have increased at The Canberra Hospital although adverse short-term neonatal outcomes have not, possibly suggesting appropriate management of these patients. Nonetheless, effort should be made to identify patients who can safely continue pregnancy to full term, given the higher proportion of SCN/NICU admissions among early-term neonates.

“…It has been estimated that the new criteria will impact on the workload for diabetes care teams by 22–32% [ 16 ]. Potentially, it may also lead to an increase in interventions such as induction of labor (IOL) and Cesarean section (CS) [ 17 ]. More sensitive criteria may also increase the psychological burden for some women during pregnancy [ 18 ].…”

“…Факторы риска ГСД аналогичны таковым при СД: возраст, ожирение, этническое происхождение, наследственная предрасположенность, диагностированный ГСД в предшествующие беременности [11][12][13][14][15]. Большой вес детей при рождении и неблагоприятный исход предыдущей беременности, а также наличие в настоящей беременности гликозурии, признаков многоводия или макросомии плода, по данным ультразвукового исследования, тоже повышают вероятность гипергликемии у матери [16,17].…”

“…The International Diabetes Federation 2019 report estimated that 20 million women developed hyperglycemia during pregnancy, 84% of them because of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) [1]. GDM is associated with significant risk and can lead to grave adverse perinatal outcomes and long-term health complications for both mothers and their offspring [2][3][4]. Self-care and changes in lifestyle are essential for adequate glycemic control and prevention of unfavorable maternal-infant health outcomes [5,6].…”
